Oh, and whitewall tires on the same type of wheels this GMC rolls on. Still, it had me mesmerized for weeks and I still think about it to this day.\r\nDriving a Crown Victoria and not having a garage, I don't think much about the size of a car when I am considering a purchase. This GMC Caballero is a great car #382 of only 2503 cars made in 85.. I bought it from MIKE JOY who loves the El Camino vehicles.\r\n\r\nI have owned 10 of these cars from 1964, 65, 66, 67, 68, 69, 72, 74 and this one. The 64 was a saddle tan, white bucket seat, 4 speed, 283/220hp model. I had two green 65's, one a 283/220hp power glide car, the other a 327/250hp with AC. The 66 was a blue / blue bench seat 283 base PG trans . 67 white / black vinyl, 327 auto trans. 68-72 models were all project cars I cleaned up and and sold. The 74 I bought new.\r\n\r\n Every one of the above cars I used in my service station and garage businesses in Southern California from 1966 thru 2004.They were a great truck / car for taking customers home and picking up parts for the shop. I really believe if Chevrolet made this vehicle today it would be a big seller.\r\n\r\nI also replaced the battery and had a LOF oil change performed in Dec 2018. This car has a lot of life left in it. It needs to be driven and enjoyed. My MS prevents me from driving it much these days. As much as I love these, their time came and went. The El Camino was always a relatively inexpensive proposition for GM, as it was based heavily on an existing vehicle, primarily the Malibu for all those years. And they actually never sold in huge numbers, compared to other Malibus, and especially compared to full-size pickups. \r\n\r\nThe only reason they were able to keep selling them as long as they did was because the RWD G-bodies got a new lease on life when gas prices stabilized in the early 1980s, and people in their target demo were still buying new cars. The tooling costs had been recovered long before this one was even built, so they kept cranking them out for additional years, at a huge profit. \r\n\r\nToday, you could never convince the average American car buyer to go for something like this. I mean the *average* buyer, not niche enthusiasts. Auto makers have to build something in a significant quantity in order to justify the staggering development costs these days. \r\n\r\nIf you were to somehow be able to plop an updated version of this in a Chevrolet showroom today, Joe Sixpack and his brood might wander over to it, curious. Then, the inevitable questions. \"Can I get it with a rear seat? One that has the proper anchors for approved infant and child seats?\" \"I can get it with all-wheel drive, right? I drive on 2\" of snow 3-4 times a year, so have to have that, to keep my family safe.\" And so on. \r\n\r\nThen Joe wanders over and buys a Chevy Colorado with all the aforementioned things he needs. Our buying habits right now in America are really skewed as a general rule. The value story of cars like this don't sell anymore because the buying public want everything in a single package. We refuse to compromise and it has delivered us bloated blobs of SUV's and trucks that have lost the utility that made trucks what they were. \r\n\r\nThese were compromise vehicles, cars with truck utility for people who maybe don't haul every day but don't need 4 seats. And, as you said were cheap to capitalize for GM because 75% of the car was already designed and it could be built on the same line as their best selling cars.\r\n\r\nToday people do the opposite they load trucks up with all the car features they want and hang on to the utility of the truck with a thread and keep a tiny bed on it. The resulting vehicle is a sort of reverse el camino. Compare that to the 'CUV' trend, with some of these glorified minivans and hatches cutting under $20,000, and it becomes evident why a wagon will fail in the marketplace. I can pick you up and bring you to the car if you want to drive it home. I believe it will make it OK, but it is a long drive. \n\nThe car is 100 % original. The original motor is the 305 V-8 with the Rochester electronic carb. The car has 67,195 miles on it since last Thursday. \n\nMy son and I drove it some 90 miles on errands last Thursday, May 30. NICE, TIGHT, NO RATTLES, DRIVES LIKE A 67000 MILE CAR IN 1987.\n\nThe 305ci V8 was fitted with a rebuilt original electronic carburetor in September 2018 at 66,977 miles, while a tune-up with new spark plugs, ignition wires, and other components took place the following December at 67,005 miles. Records for both services are included in the gallery. A new battery was also installed and a LOF filter change at the same time. The motor runs well, no smoke and does not use oil. \n\nLast Thursday on our 90 mile drive, it was 85 degrees. Temp gauge stayed normal. Oil Pressure was 65 pound on start up, then 35 pound at idle and running. Car has regular 10/30 oil. The AC blows cold, but the vents need attention as most of the AC is up to the defrost, with little out the front vents. Cabin was cool, but not fridged.\n\nI have Multiple Sclerous , and can not drive the car far. I probably should not have bought from Nascar announcer MIKE JOY for that reason.
