A \"185PS kit\" is the same for both.\r\n\r\nThere was nothing \"backwards\" in the turbo design, as it didn't require a BOV, as the turbo was in a vacuum when the throttle was lifted, eliminating any surge. Remember, Renault was at the forefront of F1 turbo engine design at the time the car was conceived and built. The system works just fine, and was actually better than any of the other turbo cars that were out at that time. \r\n\r\nAny comparisons between a BMW sedan and the R5 Turbo are silly. Sort of like comparing a pickup truck to a Caterham 7. \r\n\r\nIf you want a pickup truck, you obviously don't want a mid engine, homologation special rally car, right? \r\n\r\nThis one appears complete, save for the hard to find spare... Try GBS Alpine or 3S Development in France, maybe Alpine-American in Canada. They may have one. You will also need the hold down bungie, or you can use a common bungie. \r\n\r\nThe engine compartment could use a good cleaning, and check the oil lines and the coolant lines carefully. If you buy the car, order a set of the coolant hoses complete from the French suppliers, and a set of the oil lines (as they have the correct threaded fittings). \r\n\r\nAnd... Don't mess with it. These cars don't like modifications. \r\n\r\nIf you intend to run the car in CA, you may have problems as this one doesn't have the frequency valve, evap system, cat or Lambda box (to control the freq valve). These were specific to the R5turbo, and they are available, but a bit expensive. \r\n\r\nThe problem with the whole spare thing is that if you get a flat, you may not be able to carry off the flat tire and wheel. Too wide... My car, with the factory Coup d'Europe roll cage and the optional 15\" wheels, could not carry the front or rear wheels in the car. Not in the front compartment, not in the rear... Get a flat, call a flat bed. \r\n\r\nAs far as making a spare that looks \"exactly like\" the original, well... you need to see the original. You know, have one to take your measurements... Then, you need the tire. \r\nBest to contact Michel at Alpine-America, or the French guys, 3S or GBS Alpine. \r\n\r\nAnd, there are lots of problems trying to make wheels that are not for the original TRX tires. You an go with 15s, and there are now vintage tires available in the 285/40/15 size (a factory optional rear tire) and the 195/50 fronts. 16s or 17s are too tall, too skinny or too tall. But mostly too tall. Tires are always problematic, but lately, Pirelli has vintage rally tires that actually fit, but you need to know the catalog. \r\n\r\nNote that the factory optional tire was a 285/40/15. Nothing comes that wide and that short in 16 or 17. The fronts are 195/50/15, an available size in Pirelli Pzero competition, or Yokahama S Drive. \r\n\r\nGetting wheels is not hard to do. Lots of modular wheels can be made to fit (make sure that you leave room for the calipers, as often, the rim bolts hit), and you can still get the factory Gottis in 8 and 11\" rim widths. \r\n\r\nMinilite makes the rally wheels in TRX sizes.\r\n\r\nTRX tires are readily available through Coker and other vintage tire suppliers, or through the Michelin vintage program. What im saying is you register the car in its home state for a year and then bring it in. The federal law says that anything over 25 years old is exempt. Cal is trying to do the same thing it did with the 49 versus 50 state smog law back in the day. Which federal courts eventually ruled as unlawful. as an example I bought a 49 state legal used NSX and they tried that crap until I reminded them of the federal law. I proved the car was originally purchased in Wisconsin I then reg the car in Cal. Furthermore all you have to do is meet the 1983 specs at a referee station not your normal guy on the corner.
