The service guys always recommended rebooting by shutting the car off and locking it for ten minutes, then getting and starting it up \u2014 never failed! \n\nWe always believed the car was developed so that the VW Brand could pay for the development of the new car Bentley desperately needed but could not afford. (The Continental is fundamentally identical; unbelievably, other than the powertrain, the car didn\u2019t share a single part with the A8.) \n\nThe intended buyer was \u201cthe millionaire next door\u201d \u2014 \u201cstealth wealth\u201d \u2014 \u201ca Steve Jobs, not a Larry Ellison\u201d \u2014 we had a lot of presentations with a lot of marketing buzzwords. During the four years we sold the Phaeton, summer of \u201803 when we got them to summer of \u201807 when we finally sold through them, we had two CEOs. (Hey, there were times we switched more frequently than that.) As to the first of the two, I only recall him having one Phaeton, a W12 in Piano Black with Sun Beige leather (same as the auction car). As to the second, he never drove anything but Audi wagons. \r\n\r\nA little bit about Phaeton colors in case anyone is interested. There were about 25 available exteriors and I think five interiors. While there were the usual German blacks and greys, there were several really beautiful, rich, and interesting choices. The launch of the Phaeton came in a weird decade for German companies. Mercedes Benz (gasp!) had real quality issues around 2001-2005. Volkswagen launched the Phaeton that arguably ate into its own A8 Market and anyway few at the time wanted a 65,000 buck VW (although the V8 Passat was great but it too found few buyers). In the late 90's BMW was the owner of Land Rover (briefly) and chose that time to launch the X5. The VW and the X5 were great cars, but you have to want to be a fly on the wall when the meetings approving those cars was going on. \"We just bought Land Rover? Great! Let's develop our own SUV!\". \"We have a great luxury brand in Audi! What we need to do is launch a competitor!\". As for MB I am so glad they figured out the quality thing. And I agree that in the future there may be some value in rare oddities like this great looking car. Only major issue was the transmission failing at 105k miles (so much for it being a closed system).
