Thank you for viewing my 1987 Jeep Wagoneer Limited. I am absolutely thrilled to be here with this XJ Jeep and I greatly look forward to presenting it over the next week. In this intro, you\u2019ll find many details, history, flaws, and lore about this XJ Limited. And yes, it is a factory manual transmission, before you even ask!\r\n\r\nTo start, the options, \u201cspecification\u201d, and details. This XJ is a US Specification vehicle of course, in fact it is a 50-state car meaning it is compliant with CARB regulations and can be registered, driven, and enjoyed in California or anywhere else in the USA. As the listing includes, the Grenadine Dark Red Metallic paint is original, as are the leather-trimmed burgundy seats inside. The BA-10 5-speed manual transmission is also original, and shifts wonderfully I should add, but more on that later. The 4.0L Inline 6 starts, runs, and drives just as it should. Alongside most everything else on this car, it is original. The compression is great, oil pressure where it should be, and overall the engine feels tight and like any serviced 4.0L should feel. The 231 (Command-Trac) transfer case shifts into 4 Hi, Lo, and neutral as it should (see attached driving video) and the suspension is dialed in. The steering is one of the best I\u2019ve felt on a AMC-Era XJ, though do note the wheel is slightly off center when tracking perfectly straight down the road. Note the chrome on the exterior is original as well. I am unsure if this Wagoneer would have originally been delivered with chrome bumpers and they were subsequently replaced at some point in the last 38 years. The wood grain appears original to me. At the very least the wood trimming is most definitely original and adequately weathered as proof!\r\n\r\nMoving onto functionality, the listing comprehensively covers everything. The Cruise Control was tested and it\u2019s intermittent. It\u2019s a vacuum based system and an easy repair for someone inclined to do it. Further, the rear wiper is intermittent. At times I\u2019ve found it will work, and others not. In any case, the front wipers and washers do their thing at all speeds no problem. The gauges are all spot-on to show the oil pressure, temperature, fuel level, battery voltage, RPMs, and speed where they should be. All of the lights turn on and off perfectly, including both sets of headlights. The power seats, mirrors, locks, and windows are all operable as well. Note the rear windows are slow, but that is a problem easily solved by the JeepCables Big 7 Kit. I refrained from installing it here out of respect for originality\u2026 but of course the next owner can do what they please. The heat and air conditioning work as they should, alongside all the other features of the climate control system. Of course, the original radio was unfortunately removed, as is the case with many XJs; however, the treat here is that the power antenna works perfectly anyway. That\u2019s all I can think of for now, but as always, take a look at the driving video to see me take her out on the road and test everything on camera. \r\n\r\nAs aforementioned, the transmission shifts great and the clutch and clutch slave cylinder are new. Before all of the BA-10/5 slander, and though I have a vested interest here, I must note that it is a delight to shift. Yes, the AX-15 might be the more reliable of the three 5-speeds offered on XJs over its production run, but trust the French (Peugeot) to manufacture something and maximize the pleasure it delivers in use. \r\nOf course, the elephant in the room for many is probably the mileage! The attached CarFax actually supports the accurate mileage of 224,xxx. Why the state of Arizona issued a \u201cNot Actual Mileage\u201d title is probably a question best aimed at the clerk working that day. All I can say is that the odometer works perfectly and in speaking to the previous owner, it has never faltered. Still, with the assumption that the 224,xxx miles are accurate, I will add that this Wagoneer was a motorhome decoration for many years. From what I could muster in speaking to previous owners and the CarFax documentation, prior to 2008 it was towed behind a motorhome during the original owner\u2019s time with it. Of course, the \u201ctrue\u201d miles the Woody traveled while under its own power is indeterminate, I hope that the presentation quickly puts the idea to rest that any of those 224k miles were rough. \r\n\r\nAh, and the mandatory disclaimer about rust (or in this case lack thereof) on any XJ: please see the photos in the gallery. The floors, unibody, axles, lower control arm mounts, rockers, and interior body panels are about as nice as anything I\u2019ve seen. Credit that to being a Northeastern Native and living in Ohio, but rust is most certainly not a concern here. Speaking for myself and previous owners, the Woody has been garaged for a minimum of the last 6 years (and probably beforehand, too). \r\n\r\nThat\u2019s about all I can think of for now. Please see the gallery for all of those photos, as it\u2019s extensive and made to help give bidders and viewers alike a true portrayal of the truck. All said, the paint, wood vinyl, chrome, and overall appearance shows incredibly well. Yes, there are some minor rock chips and imperfections that we documented so please view those carefully. Google has nothing, too.\r\n\r\nA picture will certainly answer all axle questions. I'd venture a Dana 30 Front, afore mentioned BA-10 transmission, NP 242 TC, and a Dana 35 C clip rear. The Dana axles are usually stamped the model on the casting by the cover. If you're lucky, there usually is a stamped part number toggled between two cover bolts that even gives you the gear ratio (though usually lost when gear oil is changed). \r\n\r\nIn any event, this is a beautiful XJ Waggy. It\u2019s an NP231 as well, which is coded into the VIN alongside a lot of the notable stuff. \n4th digit is engine (M=4.0L), 5th is trans/TC (L is 5 speed manual + part time 4WD (NP231 Command Trac) 6th and 7th are the body style, so \u201c75\u201d is 4WD Wagoneer (all waggys were 4 door and 4WD). Cruiser54 has some great info about Renix in general and the cooling system. If you're percipient with them, they can be great; however, most people opt for a conversion to an open system which is relatively easy and not all that time or $ consuming. Of the many XJs I've had the pleasure of owning, 11 were Renix. There's a lot to become knowledgable of, and in this day and age, unless you have a vested interest in maintaining 100% originality no matter the cost, I'm of the opinion that once it gives you trouble, converting from the closed system is preferable. Some people do swear the Renixs run better though... anyway. \r\nJust my 2 cents and it's worth noting this one has given me no problems. \r\n\r\nOh, and I should add that I helped source a dark blue Briarwood for a good friend last summer with just about 90k miles... maybe one day we'll have it here. Having owned AMC/Renix and Chrysler variants, it's a preference thing. I just found the early closed system to be too troublesome and unreliable. I had several overheats, you have to \"properly\" burp the system to get air out, and it was just too much of a hassle to NOT switch to a more-reliable cooling system. \n\nIt's not JUST the cooling system, for me. The throttle body, fuel lines, and injectors in the Renix system always gave me fits. Overall, my opinion is that the 87-90 4.0 liters are, for a lack of a better term, unfinished or unpolished. The \"foreverability\" of the 4.0L really came about from the extreme reliability and strength of the H.O. variants from 91 to 99.\n\nBUT, like mentioned below, they can all work.
