This Jag stopped me in my tracks even before I noticed the manual - it was a rare color, a Vanden Plas, had the wires, and the condition seemed excellent throughout. \n\nThe bulleted list on the window claimed $100K spent on restoration, which I took with a grain of salt, but I do know a very expensive paint job when I see it, and this one has it. They also claimed a full mechanical overhaul of the engine and running gear, but provided no documents to back anything up. \n\nI took the chance once looking over the car that the prior owner had definitely spent some bucks - my guess was the restoration happened 10-15 years ago with similar miles, and it did a few miles here and there in the meantime. I base this as much on the vintage of the high end stereo as anything else, figuring it was done at the same time or close to it. I was never able to speak to the prior owner at the sale, and got the vibe the car was being sold by his family. \n\nI put a good few miles on it (for me), and have been amazed that it\u2019s able to drive around town during hot days with the AC on and no overheating. I was also impressed the dual tanks still worked. \n\nWish I had the receipts and a more full story, but at Mecum you just get what you get. Then the all new wood in this car, plus a wood steering wheel, plus the custom made and matching wood shifter panel could have cost the guy $5K or more. If the bulleted points from the auction are correct, sourcing new Vanden Plas seat leather, carpet, and various trim bits to be neatly installed over extra high-end insulation would cost thousands. European headlights and hood - not cheap. Then the stereo was definitely professionally installed, with a sub hidden under the rear deck and a custom rear panel made to conceal the amps and wiring, plus the alarm install with added-on door lock actuators - probably talking at least $2-3K there. And finally, to have a shop change your XJ6 from automatic to manual in a way that looks and feels factory quality is not going to be cheap - I'd say at least another $5-7K. And we haven't even gotten in to the mechanical overhaul that was claimed.\n\nWhy do all that stuff on this car?
