They recently did away with the safety inspection entirely, meaning you can drive with bald tires, bad wiper blades, broken headlights etc - but they still charge you the inspection fee. I live in one of the Texas counties that supposedly has more stringent emission requirements, and last week my 2005 GTO was passed with just an OBD II scan, no tailpipe sniffer etc. As long as you have no TCs posted and you pass the Mode 6 readiness test you get a sticker in Texas. It's interesting because it ended up in the town right next door to me... and because of the checkered history of the DEW-98 platform and of the last-gen Thunderbird. There was so much promise when this car was introduced, I saw it at the press days and heard the enthusiasm of the planners. The platform was the pride of the Jaguar and Ford people (there were articles about it) - it was state-of-the-art with great suspension architecture and the new V-8 engine (although Ford got the short end of that deal in order to keep differentiation from Jaguar).\r\nAnd the bizarre issue that Ford's Mod Motor didn't fit in a way that was production-able (although some people's Lincoln LSs ended up privately hot-rodded with mod-motors late, an another local person here engineered a supercharger for his Lincoln LS). Why didn't Ford's engineers design the space with just a few extra inches for the Mod Motor - that was the future V-8 for them? Or did Jaguar say \"no\"?\r\nEven sadder was the plan to use this platform for a truly world-class Mustang... yet again another platform that would have brought the Mustang out of the stone age (previous failed plan was a shortened MN-12). There was an internal financial study for doing this, I talked to the author of it. Instead it was dumbed down with a cheap strut front suspension and an abominable solid rear axle (there was an engineering LS mule at the time with these changes), a canceled IRS (also seen in public because somebody bought it from scrap), and then this later evolved slightly to the S550 and S650 we have today). Sad.\r\nAnd the DEW-98 didn't even keep up with the Jaguar S-Type - the improved front suspension for example with split lower arms (which is probably a bolt-on).
