Memory says something like 115 or maybe 128 quiet little ponies whose thirst for fuel was not much different than a 3.4 or 3.8 I saw one at our most recent British car show which had an XJ6R engine as well as little convenience upgrades such as power windows and door locks, really comfortable seats and harness seat belts. Maybe it was a Vicarage product. I have held a secret desire to simply turbocharge an original 2.4 unit. The low compression ratio of the 2.4 and the shorter stroke of the crankshalft should lend itself to successful turbocharging. Two much white-ish! Besides, those Coker Classic bias-ply tyres would certainly not do anything for the handling of an otherwise nimble car, which most likely was shod with Pirelli Cinturatos from new. Buyer could swap out those Cokers for some decent blackwall radials in the proper size and aspect ratio and sell the whitewalls for more than the new set. Or not.\n\nThe purpose of the 2.4-litre motor always puzzled me. Lyons was a master of marketing as well as design, and it cost every pence as much to build a 2.4 as a 3.8, and wasn't decontented (like the later 340 saloon, which had vinyl in place of leather, no tea trays, etc). Plus, it got no better mileage since it had to work harder to drag around the same body as the larger mill. I owned many Mk 2s and their variants over the years, and the 2.4 was underwhelming after owning a 3.8 or 3.4 (which were almost impossible to differentiate save for the badges). The best of the Sixties lot? the 3.8S with its IRS or the one-year-only 1967 420 Saloon (not to be confused with the Mk X-derived 420G). Toggles were normally placed over-head, or on the instrument panel, and sometimes had guards to their sides (but they weren't as long as these).
