I really doubt the weight changed very much, I'm sure somebody knows the numbers. To effect the longer wheelbase, what Porsche did was rather genius. The merely moved the rear wheels back. About 2 inches. It took very few changed parts: different control arms and spring plates, different torsion bar housing, axles? and different rear sheet metal with the wheel openings move a bit rearward. (they also had more pronounced flares to clear bigger wheels/tires). What this accomplished was to move the center of MASS considerably forward to give more stability at adhesion/ cornering limits. I believe that this was almost the ONLY modification till 1989 is certainly telling us they got it right.\r\nSo, please, Unless you are sooo offended by the fender flares, what other 1969 features leave you feeling bad? The sugar scoop headlamp rings can go away with a nice H4 or H1 headlight conversion. Rear reflectors? Door handles? \r\nEvery other change is for the better: bigger VW based generator, Vacuum advance distributor, better interior venting, door pockets?\r\nThis is a lovely green 912. It has the wrong distributor. Whether that makes it better or worse, I'm not sure. Keep in mind, most everybody that bought these cars new was a very THRIFTY person, often of German descent. Webers were about $400 a set from CB or PMO. Actually FIXING your old Solexes might cost a lot more. Now, spending $500-1500 to make the original carbs work right does not seem unreasonable. \r\nOne thing I really dislike about a Weber conversion is you lose the ability to use the very fine stock SILENCED Knecht air filters.
