Watch the 1968 race at Riverside on YouTube to see a whole pack of Torino Cobras going wheel to wheel wide open for 500 miles. This Torino Cobra was built before that date. It also has a Ram Air hood but no functioning Ram Air assembly. It does have the external engine oil cooler. I know a lot of discrepancies occur during assembly but the true tell for a SCJ engine is the front crankshaft spacer with an integral counterweight commonly called the \"hatchet\". The 428s were externally balanced and required external weighting on the crankshaft damper and the flywheel or flexplate. The SCJ required the addition of the hatchet because of the heavier LeMans connecting rods.\r\n\r\nThe external engine oil cooler was needed to keep the oil cool driving to and from the race track. The engine revved so high in street use, it caused the oil to overheat. The additional plumbing had a detrimental effect in that it reduced oil pressure inside the engine. Never thought I'd see the near twin to one I got to drive in high school. As I've mentioned too many times here before my father ran a highly successful car dealership that peaked in the seventies specializing in niche stuff like BMWs, Mercedes etc that other dealers shied away from. And especially muscle cars. We liked the stuff from Chevy and felt they ruled the streets. That all changed with the arrival of a lime green Torino that I now believe to be a Drag Pack. Up until then with the exception of a previously mentioned triple carb 406 Ranchero we used for the company truck we were unimpressed by Ford power. Whoever ordered it new checked all the right boxes. It had as I recall the GT package that I believe gave it the upgraded interior with bucket seats, console and I think a little fancier exterior trim. And the Ram Air option. I didn't know Fords that well but it had extremely low rear gears hence my thinking it may have been an SCJ. I ran it at our local strip and passing through the traps it was hitting the rev limiter in high gear. It turned low fourteen second passes that doesn't sound all that impressive but at our 4200 foot altitude it is. That translates into a low thirteen second number at sea level from my experiences. It was all stock with the addition of headers and having lots of drag racing experience from those days, that's the car that will run with the best. Only a handfull of cars we had performed that well and they were all solid lifter, radical big block cars that were for the most part in lighter cars. What really got our attention was how docile it was and how little time you had to spend keep it running right compared with the solid lifter/radical cammed Chevies that required alot of time with the hood up getting valves adjusted, new plugs, points etc. This car idled and ran like grama's car and lay'd down fifty foot patches of black rubber at will. \n A close friend of mine bought the car and within three months totaled it out. He paid $900 for it and a savvy Ford truck owner gave him $500 for the motor on the spot. Sadly that was the end of too many unique cars like this back in the day. Good luck to the potential buyer they'll get an awesome ride that they won't see at the local car shows. I hope they take it out and get rubber in every gear now and then, rather than use it for a trailer queen. I'm in the car business and it's what I call the big four, white, silver, grey and black. And like you say it's further driven by sales managers who don't want a left over car at year's end. Growing up in the car business the classic bright, non metallic red was called \"retail red\" and now you can't give it away. Especially if a woman is choosing. That is I believe, a reflection on our times as to who calls the shots in the buying process. @Diego As I mentioned in an earlier post we had the near twin to this Torino on my Dad's car lot and after he let me drive it to school (there was a madness to his method) a good friend went right down to our lot and purchased the car without a second thought, his dad in tow to co-sign. That type of color was considered a mainstream finish. People were much more daring in those days and so were the manufactures. I mean you could order your '67 GTO in probably four or five different shades of blue alone. My brother's best friend ordered one in Fontaine Blue and it was beautiful. Another of his friends ordered one in a color similar to MB's smoke silver and it looked great when he threw on a set of Cragar S/S's. Right now Infiniti (the brand I sell) offers a similar blue to the Pontiac color called Hagane blue and it's nearly sell proof. Sadly there's not much imagination when it comes to colors in the car world on the buyers end.
