Most had the TH400 automatic with a \r\n Buick nail head bolt pattern and an adapter to the 327. At some point the 327 was phased out and they began using the Buick 350, 1968 thru 1970. AMC bought Jeep in 1970. They used up a lot of leftover parts, including the Buick V8s. At that point they phased in the \"new style\" AMC V8s, 304, 360, and eventually 401. All 6 cylinder Wags used the AMC straight six from about 1966 forward. This yellow Wag looks to be very original, and has the 327 auto combo that was very popular on these during the time. They did do a hard facelift on the J-models for 1966, but for most of the mechanicals, including engines, they continued to make running changes. The AMC 327 was kind of obsolete by the time it found its way into these Jeeps, but it is an exceptionally smooth and quiet engine. It is a bit on the heavy side, hard on the front springs, and the much lighter Buick 350 made for a more balanced machine. Kaiser tried an OHC six which had reliability issues, so they switched to the AMC 6 cylinder. The 327 V8 continued until about 1968 when it was replaced by the Buick 350. Kaiser had nothing to do with the AMC 327 or any other AMC motor except that AMC poached a person named Dave Potter who then designed the AMC 250 motor in 1956. That motor became the 327 in 1957. In 1966, AMC released another V8 design also attributed to Dave Potter. The 290 V8 is a bit different from the 250-287-327 engine family. For those of you that think the Buick 350 is better than the 327: Buick 350s were reported as being prone to cracks and i have personally experienced that condition.
