The driving experience is non-scary (at the speeds its capable of) but 16HP doesn't do much. Working up through the first three gears takes about as long as a VW bug or 2CV owner would expect, but when you FINALLY look down, you're lucky to be doing maybe 35mph (57km). 4th gear is a BIG jump, almost like an overdrive, but the good news (such as it is) is that you won't be rev limited, and the car will reach about 50-55mph on the level, maybe even more, although NOW things are starting to get a little frantic inside the cabin. and ANY hill at all kills your speed. Not such a silly question by Auburn Speedster. The Topolino is probably one of the most modified and tuned cars in the world. You have 2 basic options to give it more urge, a supercharger, difficult to find one small enough, or one of the period conversions such as made by Abarth, Stanguellini, or Siata if you can find one. As always there is a word of caution at this point. The stock gears and diff ratios are chosen for 55MPH max at 4400 rpm. The transmission rubber disc couplings cannot handle any more power. the standard cooling system cannot handle any more heat, and the motor can\u2019t handle any more revs. The chassis can however and the Siata conversion with which I am most familiar addresses all of these and includes twin carb inlet manifold, Squish cross-flow head, alloy finned sump, bunch of bananas exhaust, water pump, straight cut close ratio gears, Hardy-Spicer type prop shaft and a taller diff ratio. When fitting this lot an extra bottom connection is needed on the radiator to handle the extra water flow and the exhaust changed to the other side due to the cross-flow head. This will double the power to a mighty 32 BHP and gearing to 90mph, the catch is that it will cost as much as the car again.\r\nThe only items non-standard that I can see are the seat covers, the helper coil springs on the front shock absorbers, and the aluminium rocker cover which is a 500C pattern with the bayonet oil filler cap. The 500B rocker cover has a knurled screw threaded cap. I would check that the cylinder head is the original cast iron unit because when the 500C model came out with the alloy head, the inlet and exhaust valves were each reduced in diameter by 2 mm for cooling reasons and the Italians didn\u2019t like less power in a heavier car.\r\nThe 500B script on the grille is not original Fiat but it must be an aftermarket accessory to distinguish it at a distance from the side-valve cars because I have seen it on other period cars in Italy.
