It was my second car. It replaced a '72 Fiat Spider. Despite being 10 years older it was significantly more reliable than the Fiat and that is despite the Lucas electricals.\r\n\r\nSuch an impact it had on me - I still remember the VIN B9109745LRX.\r\n\r\nIt was pretty stock and street legal but with a rollbar that allowed us to vintage race it. We drove it from Los Angeles to Willow Springs and Riverside Raceway. We removed the spare tire from the trunk, the tools and sometimes the passenger seat, went racing, and packed it up and drove home. Never much drama. It was a bit \"porky\" compared to Sprites and Elvas and MG's that we had to race but good fun.\r\n\r\nThe dual Zenith (if I recall correctly) carburetors were not problematic.\r\n\r\nIt was a great little car. Good looking and well balanced IMO. I would love it, but am a little heavy in Sunbeam holdings at present...\r\n\r\nI'm surprised, with all the expertise represented by past owners --yes, AlpineJay, my friend, you among them-- no mention has been made of this car's seats. The seats in Series 1 and 2 Alpines were a simpler affair; they were rounded and had virtually a flat seat back; there was no bolster to speak of.\r\n\r\nThe seats in this car, or at least the seat covers, are from a later Series Alpine. There are a few other things about the car that are modifications, like the carb already mentioned. From the photos, I suspect the car in place to be a two barrel Weber. \r\n\r\nThis choice may have been made due to parts availability for the early Zeniths, or because the single Weber is easy to set up and compliments this engine nicely. There's not a lot of power to be gained by the conversion, I believe.\r\n\r\nAs B9003580 was most likely built on the 10th of February, 1960, it falls clearly in the range of the Series 1 cars. A photo of the chassis number, stamped in the sheet metal of the vertical, off ( right ) side of the firewall, and a photo of the alumin(i)um chassis plate on the opposite side of the scuttle would help confirm this information and provide the color code at the same time.\r\n\r\nThis is such a handsome car. Unlike some on this thread, I Love the tall fins. FWIW, there is a question on if Lowey worked on the T-Bird. One suggestion is that the most he did was the port holes on the hardtop. You should do a search for the original Alpine model designed by Lowey. It looked nothing like a T-Bird. And his stated design points also do not match the T-Bird. What apparently happened is that AFTER he presented the car, the Rootes family required a number of changes to the car for the American market. This included changing the smooth headlight rings to hooded, pushing the windshield more upright, and others. I'd also add that at some point they increased the ride height of the front end off the tires. I don't know why they did that - perhaps for some US headlight or bumper requirement. But that also changes the overall look of that car - more towards a T-Bird.\n\nSo while I agree the end result creates some similarities, Lowey should not be blamed for it.\n\nOn the plus side, Rootes brought back the smooth headlight rings for all racing cars and the last Alpines and Tigers. \n\n@babadawv - agree on the seats and other items. He did work for Loewy both in South Bend and London and worked on Studebaker whose chief designer was part of the Loewy group. Howe then went to Ford in 55 and was head hunted by Rootes in 57. He essentially did all of the design of the new Alpine then, but had much of the Loewy influence behind him. The original quarter clay mock up does not have hooded headlights and appears to have a more rakish windshield. It's all pretty well documented in a November 1992 article in Thoroughbred &Classic Cars.\r\nI love my 63 Alpine as it was the car of my dreams when I was 16. SOCOA has a great forum as well.\r\nRegarding the stuck fuel gauge, you may want to look into the sending unit in the gas tank; that acts like a float in a toilet; if it's stuck, then the problem is easily solved.
