A wonderful car guy who was pleased to welcome another car guy into the family many years ago. He'd always had some sort of fun car in addition to his regular driver. After he retired, he did OK on his special-ed teachers pension, but lived a pretty frugal life. \r\n\r\nIn 1998 we went to the annual auto show just like we always did and we both marveled at the stunning metallic gold XK8 convertible rotating on the display stand. \"Bob\" I said \"This is all you buddy. You really should get this car.\" He looked at me like I had lost my mind and said \"You must be looking at the wrong wallet. I can't afford a car like this.\" I told him that in a few years one of these would be half the price, then it will work. \r\n\r\nTwo years later I started sending him pictures of cars available online. I outlined his payment plan, down payment and ran some projections on the numbers via email. Then I finished the email and said \"Bob. Now is the time. This will likely be your last car. Go out with a bang and live a little. You've earned it.\"\r\n\r\nSure enough. He pulled the trigger and bought one. Gold with ivory interior.\r\n\r\nHe spent the next 10 years driving all over the country blasting classical music, driving to see friends on the East Coast, and enjoying every mile up to 160k. It was his last car as I finally sold it for him in 2014 when he started scraping the fenders a bit too much entering the garage. It was time. \r\n\r\nUp until his last months before passing we'd still talk about those times in his Jag. One day he told me \"Thanks for helping me with the Jag. I now have the valve/cam covers pulled of to do the \"famous\" failed gaskets, coils, and secondary tensioner issues on my AJ30. I inspected the secondary tensioners and found them both split. Now, do I know what the primary chain tensioners look like? No sir...And I'm not pulling the front cover off either. FWIW, I've been hearing that those primary tensioners are typically not the ones that self destruct....
