Question - what is the date on the Oregon title which should indicate when the California registration was transferred?\r\n\r\nThe extreme dry/cracking of the interior suggests a really hot environment prior to moving to Oregon.\r\n\r\nThe mention of a California title - and the sun/heat damaged interior and dry under-carriage suggests Palm Spring - Mojave Desert area.\r\n\r\nThe odd add-on rear-a/c goes along with having been used in a very hot and dry zone.\r\n\r\nThere should be an extra freon line - running from the front to the rear - easy to look around the engine and check for a non-standard extra freon line (is that blue hose on the driver's side of the engine for freon? - the printing on the hose suggests a psi rating).\r\n\r\nI'd chose an interior restoration due to heat damage over an under-carriage rust renovation anytime!\r\n\r\nThe mention of \"Brand\" from the former CA title is always worth researching. It's my (limited) experience the term can suggest something very technical (like insurance salvage) or something more mundane (like a lost title that had to be revived etc.). The front seats looked like overstuffed chairs, yet they were firm and comfortable for driving all day. The ride and handling was firm yet comfortable and exceptional for the time. First car I ever owned that I felt perfectly comfortable and at ease at over 110 mph. At about 80 mph It felt like it hunkered down and Invited more. Amazingly stable. I particularly remember one drive I took through the mountains of Vermont, beautiful highway, two lanes each way with long sweeping curves, mountains on one side and overlooking valleys below on the other. \r\n\r\nAnother thing that always tickled me about the car was that the glove box door was a slab of wood a half an inch thick. That, and the bank vault like thunk when you shut the doors. If this car were on the East coast I'd bid- a 108 which is this free of rust is a find and worth rehabbing. I've never seen a rear mounted AC unit, and I bought 108s when they were new (at least four of them) I agree that a car which is cleaner underneath than inside is unusual, and even more worth saving. I think this is a bit of a find, really. \r\n\r\n108s and their variants are some of the best looking, best engineered cars ever built by anyone, not just Mercedes-Benz. This one is even in a nice color combination- not flashy, but handsome. I hope someone takes it in hand and rejuvenates it- I don't know that the value is there (yet) for a complete restoration, but there's so much to work with that I would hate to see it NOT happen. \r\n\r\nActually, when these cars were new the AC was pretty good by the standards of the day. But the AC is kind of the factory equivalent of what the used-car dealers used to call a \"hang-on icebox\"- dealer-installed AC. Mercedes-Benz was just getting into the idea of factory air conditioning at the time this car was made, and basically what they had done was to integrate a Behr unit into the styling of the dash. It only cooled the front (there was no ducting to the back, actually no ducting at all, I'm fairly sure) so the AC airhandler pulled in air at its sides and blew it out the front vents you see. The heating and defrosting air flow was, I believe, separate from the conditioned air flow of the AC unit. \r\n Perhaps because these units used R12, the conditioned air was actually rather cold- I recall mine working fine in the 95 degree heat of a Midwestern summer. But that WAS nearly fifty years ago....\r\n The 109 I have now, a 1971 model, has similar AC, converted to 134a and a Sanden rotary compressor. While it is not up to modern standards, it's quite functional in weather short of blazing hot. In blazing hot weather, I drive a Toyota. THAT AC will freeze you out of the car regardless of what the weather is like outdoors. Years ago, I owned a Porsche 924S which had surprisingly good AC. It was made by Nippondenso.......\r\n\r\nSorry for the reminiscing and drift.
