My first Citroen was a '59 ID19, bought the summer of '63, and it had no power steering or power brakes, but a separate glass DOT3 reservoir above a standard master cylinder, and no direct power assist from the hydraulic system, which provided only for the suspension.\n\nThe ID pumps were simply a single piston unit bolted to the LH front side of the engine block, and driven by the cam, just as the fuel pump is. As for being \"difficult to fix\", I beg to differ - it is a very simple pump, and it only had to power the suspension, vs the DS's power steering (a big sucker of hydraulic power nearly constantly} and the power, self-load proportioning brakes and hyd suspension. \n\nAnd that early pump is very easy to access, once the generator is out of the way. As for fixing that pump, I had to do that the summer of 1966, during a cross-country marathon drive from Pomona College in Claremont, Ca., to a N. Jersey co. parking lot to catch a plane to Europe to work for the summer before grad school at N. Western. \n\nTwo roomies and I were drivng the car thru Nebraska around early June, and the single piston pump's large diameter Oring failed just E. of North Platte, and we lost the suspension. I've detailed this misadventure in prev. Cit auctions on BAT. We bounced into N. Platte on the bump stops, & parked in a gas station lot, where I removed the pump - quite an easy job - two bolts as I recall, the fluid hose, and the single output line to the regulator. 3 bolts held the end cover in place, and it was sealed by a large Oring. I knew I'd never find the right ethylene propylene rubber material, especially as it was a metric size, and this was 1966 after all! My only hope was the single hardware store in town. Rummaging thru their bathroom seals, I found a way too thick Oring that had the right diameter, but couldn't be squeezed into the counterbore in the pump body. Necessity being a Mother, I whittled that Oring down on its noncritical surfaces with a razorblade to where I could cram it into the groove and force it in with the endcap bolts. I refilled the tank with DOT3, and we finished the near 3000 mile trip in time to make the plane. And I never replaced that seal, as being a static one, even if it was nitrile rubber or neoprene, and swelled due to the brake fluid, It couldn't possibly go anywhere. The car itself finally succumbed to the rust from salt on Chicago roads. but I'm still driving Citroens to this day.\n\nWhen Citroen decided to give the ID cars power steering and the full automatic load-proportioning brake system, the single pump had to be replaced by the large 7 piston pump to handle the greater fluid volume needs. That particular pump was a low pressure one which I believe powered the Citromatic brain's gearshifting. And every DS19 car also had the larger cannister pump - so two hyd pumps on those early cars. My father's car, which started our lifetime downhill slide with these cars, was a '58 DS19 he bought as a tradein at a Studebaker's lot in Salt Lake City in 1962, and it had all the hydraulics of the very first series cars, so we learned on the original design, which was the most complex of the whole history of the car, and many early hydraulic actuators were later redesigned for better serviceability and simplicity, but not by much! \r\n\r\nThe ID19 was brought out shortly after the intro of the DS19, as Citroen quickly recognized that the DS19's price was pretty high in the day, and to improve the car's appeal overall, they deleted power steering, power brakes (for a simple master cyl with glass reservoir), and the automatic brake load proportioning that came on the DS19. Plus the ID19 had the very simple sheetmetal dash in wrinkle grey paint. \r\n\r\nSo again, the DS19 never had a single piston pump - only the ID19 sedans & breaks. And the engineers redesigned the shifter brain for the Citromatic to do away with the low pressure hyd pump integrated in the waterpump - that was a really messy design, with hoses all over the place, and probably caused a lot of trouble. \r\n\r\nThen of course, the Citromatic switched to the CR - centrifugal regulator - driven by the cannister pump - to do away with the really odd spring-loaded valve actuated by a linkage on the weber carb throttle shaft, which controlled the clutch engagement control, if I recall correctly. That springloaded valve was also paired with a throttle depressing hyd piston mounted above the throttle linkage - this can all be seen in the earliest factory manuals with their exquisite scale drawings - incredible are for a car manual - best I've ever seen. Those early manuals are collectors items in my book! \r\n\r\nSo this '64 DS19 has all the significant and good changes to its Citromatic controls - most owners have never seen those early cars, which were probably superceded around 1962 or thereabouts. \r\n\r\nSo again, to keep things straight, one needs to understand the basic differences between the early DS and ID cars. And that early lowpressure pump isn't that hard to rebuild - usually they only need a thorough cleaning and careful disassembly and reassembly, as it is more complex than the standard waterpump. I recently found another of the early dual function WPs which was stuck.
