It was in the 1967 1600-2 brochure. \n\nEarly 1600 models have a mounting hole in the radiator core support to accommodate this strap. The other end is attached to a hood hinge bolt - just like the auction car. It may have actually been a TUV requirement. It wasn't unusual to see a Mini Cooper with an oversized round version fitted well above the bumper for a greater measure of visibility. When a Mercedes Benz W114 is bearing down on you from the rear in heavy fog, getting punted off the road into a dark abyss is a best, undesirable. \n\nTo that end, the BMW 2002 mid-70s factory accessory brochure featured a small, red rectangular light (similar to this example) and console switch. The switch mounts in place of the green \"dummy\" - just to the right of the ashtray. \n\nI had this system hooked up to my 1973 2002tii, but it was purely for cosmetic reasons. The driver's door still possesses its factory-applied build sticker and the dashboard appears to be in fine shape. The 320i \"S\" packet steering wheel is always a nice touch and even the carpet and interior vinyl appears to be original. For all I know the mileage is original, but there are, unfortunately no records to confirm.\n\nThe number of attached invoices from the past few years totals to what might be nearly equal to the current bid, which is typical of those who do no major work on their own. That's not a criticism, just an observation. \n\nWhile it may be subjective, I like the wheels. The paint color looks in the photos to be too dark for Fjord, but too light to be Baikal. (FWIW, Fjord cars most often came with blue interiors, while Baikal came with black. Maybe the original color was Polaris silver or Chamonix white - both those colors came with blue interiors.) \n\nThat's not the first time I've seen \"mysterious light blue\" and no color tag in the engine compartment. (All two-stage metallic paints applied to BMWS of the early 1970s prematurely failed and were repainted - with payment - at least in part - by BMW.)\n\nThe \"Euro\" bumpers are from a pre-71 and incorrect for this year 2002. This is a another matter of experience or personal taste. As time goes by it become less and leas important for newer owners to care about anything other than removing those \"rubber baby buggy bumpers.\" Be advised it takes a certain amount of planning prior to paint to do this conversion. Having done a number of them professionally, including removal of the side markers, it's trickier than one might expect. Results are varied. Witness this auction example.\n\nThe photos of the left side show lovely panel gaps and shiny paint. The right side is a bit troubling. The door gaps are far less consistent. In photo image #161, the are some vertical \"hash marks\" along the lower edge of the rocker panel. The metal appears to have a minor tear in the middle. This seems to suggest the use of an auto body pinch weld clamp or clamps. This is a marvelous tool with a large pulling ring and associated ring that when tightly clamped to a pinch welded seam, can pull out misshapen door openings (or other pinch welded sections) on a rack with the help of a hydraulic ram. And while, perhaps the photos are in the shade and fewer in number than the driver's side images, I'd need a closer inspection to ease my mind about what I see here. Fresh undercoating can hide a multitude of sins. \n\nAll that said, my observations are not likely to dissuade bidders from going \"all in\", \"send\", or even \"full send\" on this one.
