One sometimes sees the underside of a Pagoda painted black where rust repairs have been needed, this car is pristine.\r\n\r\nThe brown (sometimes called root beer) colored substance you see is cosmoline which was applied at the factory to guard against corrosion or other damage. \r\n\r\nWe believe that the reason why the car was repainted and why a new interior was installed at that time is because the first ten or fifteen years of the car's life it lived in Phoenix and then Tuscon Arizona and the arid and hot weather conditions and bright sun got the better of the original paint and interior. For this reason the entire car was painted versus a spot repair.\r\n\r\nWhoever painted the car back then did a masterful job however the interior that was installed did not use the correct materials and some short cuts were taken (they deleted the door armrests and map pockets for example). Car buffs like us always wish we had more paperwork, service records etc. However, the picture is pretty clear. The first owner bought the car in Phoenix (he later became the Mayor of Phoenix), the second owner had it in Tuscon and we think moved to California. The 1980's have a shortage of paperwork so there could have been another owner in there, the third owner bought the car and brought it to their home in Idaho (I think in 1988) where they were sure never to drive it in bad weather. (See photo of the car in its former home - the cover did not arrive with the car but you can see it was in a garage and under cover). \n\nThe lady from whom I bought the car, and who owned it for 32 years was 82 years old (I of course dealt with her daughter and granddaughter, I had none of these records - it was a four-month process) naturally took to driving the car less and less as time went by, on top of the fact that it was not driven in the winter or bad weather. Fuel Filter. \n\nWhat I did not fully take in was that not only was the car not running when I bought it but this last four-page $6072 receipt was only 84 miles before I bought the car in August of 2019 with 116,726 miles on it. \n\nWhen the car came into MBZ Motors in Winnetka CA (will post more info on the work I have had done since) my mechanic went through the car bumper to bumper, I just asked him to do everything he would do if it was his car.\n\nIt soon became clear that the one part of the fuel system that the old owner did not pay to replace, the fuel injection system, was \"the problem\" and we believe that the guys in Idaho did not have the expertise to rebuild it. I will find out or one of our fellow commentators will let us know, or both. \n\nOn the subject of the radio, the Data Card (Photo 289 Second Row) Box 51___ shows that the car left the factory without a radio. If it showed 510 e.g. that would be a Becker Mexico and the other digits (511, 512 etc.) would be other Becker models. It turns out that the radio in the car was widely used and authorized as a dealer installed option, namely a Blaupunkt AM. This radio was apparently cheaper than the Becker models, also, there may not have been a plethora of FM stations in Phoenix in 1967. \n\nThe car had an aftermarket head unit in it when I got it which was not worth saving but it did come with the original or dealer installed Blaupunkt which I had serviced, (I have a friend who is a retired aerospace engineer who repairs old car radios as a hobby) and which we installed (Photo 113). Unfortunately, one of the previous owners installed twin speakers (photos 141 & 168) although the front speaker is a correct new replacement speaker from Germany. The original Blaupunkt certainly works fine but it is not up to the audiophile standards of today and the new owner may want to upgrade. As a rule, I enjoy driving with the top down and listening to the sound of the engine which is music to my ears. That is I do not use the radio much. One oddity is that you do not rotate the dial to turn it on or off, you depress it to turn it on and repeat to turn it off - that took me a moment or two to sort out. We steam cleaned the wheels wells and the undercarriage from the motor back which washed away 58 years of road dirt. The photos I am adding here show what the wheel wells looked like when we put on the new tires. You can see that no rust or problems are visible and that the new photos after the steam clean reveal perfectly preserved original metal. The new photos of course show that the wheel wells were painted blue at the factory which is of course normal, the dark spots are cosmoline which is darker than the the cosmoline on the undercarriage. Our objective was to clean and remove any kind of dirt but not to hit it so hard that all the cosmoline would come off, at the risk that some of the paint and primer from the factory would also come off. \n\nIn photo 258 you can see a little area of rub through which I believe occurred as a result of the previous owner fitting a set of 205-75-14 Michelin Road Handler tires, Photos 314 & 315, this only became apparent after detailing the car and something should be done to protect this small area from the elements. So we surmise that serial numbers 14,702 to 19,646 (4,944 cars) were built in 1966. As far as I know the car needs nothing but continuing routine service and a caring owner. \r\n\r\nHere is an excerpt from a recent listing by BAT Superstar (at least where Mercedes is concerned) Dean Laumbach. It is from a comment on one of his listings, a 116D on February 8th:\r\n\r\n\"Many 'farm fresh' very low mileage example of cars like these are simply cleaned up and brought back to market in \u201cas found\u201d condition. I always think about whether the eventual new owner knows about what they just signed up for? I hate seeing ultra low mileage examples of cars simply being passed around from collector to collector and never driven and enjoyed as intended. A classic all original low mileage car is not just a piece of art or a fine wine to be placed on display. These cars should all be thoroughly recommissioned for the new owners and future generations to actually enjoy. There is nothing more satisfying than driving a 30-50 year old \u201cas new\u201d car at spirited highway speed as the appreciation for the engineering is where the real pleasure come from. I get all calls all the time from sellers asking me if I would be interested in purchasing \u201csuch and such\u201d a car that has sat in a museum environment for decades with nothing in the way of exercise or preventative maintenance. I am interested, but usually not at the retail plus price they are asking. I know the work involved in rehabilitating that car for actual road use, and it is daunting !!! Whenever I get a call about a real and true \u201cbarn find\u201d I AM NOT INTERESTED !!! Buy a car that has been sitting for more than 10 years in a less than optimum storage environment, and you will know why I make that statement !!! An automobile is a lot like a living and breathing organism and with lack of use and care it will fall into numerous states of disrepair, and on vintage cars the acronym NLA is one you NEVER want to hear.\"\r\n\r\nI prefer not to plagiarize and so I have borrowed Dean's comment to say something that I could not say better myself. There might be a quibble as to the term \"low milage\" - I think 119,000 actual and documented miles over 58 years comes close enough. So, for example, most US cars will not have any indication that \"factory air\" was installed on the data card. \r\n\r\nHaving said that, I believe that this car had dealer installed AC when it was new and that the former owners had it removed, perhaps when they redid the interior, bearing in mind that they lived in Idaho and that dealer AC did not blow that cold. See Photo 215 which shows a space for an additional fan belt. I think this car would be particularly easy to retrofit with AC. I am no expert when it comes to AC but I understand that Bud's Benz is one parts house that is well thought of when it comes to upgrading AC systems https://www.budsbenz.com/catalog/230-250-280-sl/z-air-conditioning and I understand that many owners whose Pagodas have AC will replace components anyway - for example a new AC compressor will work better and draw less power from the engine than a 58-year-old compressor. \r\n\r\nPersonally, I am happy without AC because I almost always drive the car with the top down but this resource could be useful to people who are new to the hobby. In a word, I believe the 230SL and early 250SL are therefore bargains compared to the later cars which can cost more. \r\n\r\n\"It is interesting to me that among Pagoda enthusiasts, the 250SL is underappreciated, particularly, the early 67 models like the one up for bid. Although the 280SL models have more power, far fewer of the early 250SL models were produced, and they did not suffer from the US safety mandates which prompted many changes. What should be Photo 352 (driver's side) will show that the body number does not appear in the upper lefthand corner (as you look at the photo). \r\n\r\nAs we have discussed in the notes below, we believe that the entire car was repainted but due to sun and heat damage from the car's days in AZ (not accident or rust) because there is no sign of rust, rust repair or accident or accident damage anywhere on the car. \r\n\r\nSometimes you see these cars with the wrong body number indicating that the hood came from another car. In this case it is almost certainly an NOS hood ordered from the company, likely at the same time the car was repainted. As my mechanic commented, this was not uncommon because the hood was made of aluminum and sometimes something would drop on the hood. We can find no damage to the front of the car, will take a few more photos of the inside of the grill area etc. When the old owners (again we believe 1980's because it is a single stage paint job in the factory color of 334G) had the car painted the workmanship was superb and you cannot tell from looking at the car that there is any difference between the hood and the rest of the car. \r\n\r\nIf you look at photos 156 & 157 you will see the body number imprinted on the underside of the top boot. I think a MBZ Dealer such as Lyle Pearson might have had access to company records showing the build date. \r\n\r\nIt would be nice if the company had put this info on the Data Card (Photo 289). Speaking of the Data Card, some may wonder about the blacked-out squares, these were blacked out by the Mercedes Classic Center when I ordered the Data Card from them because these squares contain codes that allow us cut new keys if we obtain correct key blanks. I have the codes which they emailed separately. In the meantime, we have two sets of keys which appear to go back to when the car was new (see photo). All keys and locks work perfectly.
