The GS was about as pure as you could want for 1984/5. Having owned two 85 GSL-SE's in tender blue metallic over the years I always wanted to own an 84/5 GS and upgrade to a 13B.\r\n\r\nFWIW, each time I owned my GSL-SE's I also concurrently owned a few 77-78 280Z's and driving each car back to back was akin to stepping through two decades worth of Japanese engineering at its best. The fuel injected 280Z's with a stock suspension are not bad however, with Tokico Illumina struts and Tokico springs they are much more entertaining. Stepping into the GSL-SE with a stock suspension the limited slip was a great idea on Mazda's part and if you pushed it the RX-7 had enough power to induce some interesting over steer situations where a 280Z would understeer all day long until you did something truly obscene. I once found out on one of my 280Z's: set tire pressures to 36 psi and set the front struts at 5 and the rears at 4 and then attempt to get through a right hand 35 mph turn at 70 and you will get the car to come around all at once. Ah the joys of being 25 yrs old.\r\n\r\nThere cannot be too many of these 84/5 GS models left in clean original condition like this one. Oil changes are cake (filter is on top), spark plugs can be changed in 10 minutes and the plug wires, cap and rotor are readily accessible. The rest of the car is simple mechanically and easy to work on. In some ways these are an ideal first classic, with good online forum support.\r\n\r\nMy experience is the rotary engine in this generation is very reliable. Keep the oil topped up and clean, maintain the cooling system and all should be good (overheating kills the coolant seals and/or warps the rotor housings, necessitating a rebuild). I daily drove one (12A) from new to 132k miles and never had an engine problem (the carburetor did eventually need a rebuild). I had another (13B) that was at 145k when I sold it after 8 years (bought used at over 100k miles) and it was still running great (only needed a starter in the time I owned it). A carb rotary and the right person behind the wheel is a marriage well made , the rotary likes to suck a lot of fuel and air at high rpm\r\nand the driver must let the carb do so. While the GS might be the better track car due to its light weight (if you swap the rear end with a GSL and remove the A/C), buyers looking for a cruiser will welcome those GSL options and pay a little more. A very direct and pure driving experience. Dozens of autocross events and 30+ open track events and never a mechanical issue. My car's lack of A/C, PW, PL, PS, sunroof never bothered me. No brake issues ever experienced on a road course, even with the rear drums. I did eventually swap in a GSL diff. Towards the end of my ownership, I didn't get around to driving it much as I had several older cars and a daily driver. Lack of use killed it. New or reman 12A from Mazda are NLA. I bought a salvage engine which turned out not to be in usable condition. My engine could not be rebuilt. It got too expensive and complicated to cobble something together from assorted years of 12A production. I would up selling the car to a guy who had totaled his car. He put his drivetrain into my car. I still e-mail him yearly to see if he'll sell it back to me.
