Not impossible for this car to have 106,500 miles as I have owned a couple of 280zx's with original date coded wires in excess of 100k miles. My advice would be to replace those and save the originals as I don't think I would want to be driving around with 42 year old spark plug wires. I also noticed the original fuel injection hose at the fuel filter. At 42 years I would definitely replace those hoses ASAP.\r\n\r\nAs you stated it would be nice to learn the back story of this car's history if possible. Certainly well presented and should do well here as the selling prices of these 280zx models have been on the rise in recent years. The 15\" turbo wheels are a nice upgrade for these cars and I recall seeing lots of these wheels on both first generation and second generation Z cars back in the 1980's and 1990's. I will respond to the questions already asked, but thought i would just provide full disclosure on what i know and what i have been told about the car. First off, i am an avid private collector of low mileage, original paint survivor classics from the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's and have always gravitated towards and kept unmolested true survivor cars having owned dozens of the same over my 30 years of collecting. My first ever car was a 1971 240Z when i was 17, so nostalgia for these cars run deep with me. When i bought this car two years ago, I owned several low mileage original survivor 240's, (including a double digit Z, 2 triple digit Z's an 11k mile 240z, a 5k mile 260z, 13k mile 280z and a 2500 mile 280 2+2). I was looking for a low mileage ZX to complete the vertical of my Z car collection. This car was represented to me as an all original time capsule and was perfect. I looked at all the photos and videos and believed that to be true, however, the car did not come with paperwork, hence, i was apprehensive and decided to trust my eyes and the Illinois broker selling the car for a Pennsylvania dealer who had the car on consignment from the 2nd owner. When the car arrived in California, and after careful examination, i realized that the car was not 100% as described, and although i believe it to be an original 6500 mile car, featuring an all original drivetrain and near spotless interior, it had some body work repair on the passenger front fender and the car had been resprayed to match. After receiving the title, i spoke to the former owner in Pennsylvania and was told that he was the second owner having purchased the car from its original owner who happened to be an attorney. Apparently the car had been involved in a minor accident in the first year of its ownership and that the car ended up in a body shop where a law suit ensued tying the car up for many years. When i asked him if he had any documentation or the contact info for the original owner, he stated that he gave all that he had, including the original window sticker and certain other documents to the dealer. I contacted the broker and was told that he never received any such paperwork. Other than the word of the second owner, i can not prove or verify the cars true history. Having said all this, i removed certain interior panels and other tell tale areas of the car including the rear hatch compartment, which revealed the original spare tire and jack having never been removed and the blocks remaining in their unopened wrapper. The underside of the car also indicates very little use confirming my belief that the car is a 6500 mile example. The car starts up immediately and drives and operates wonderfully as a low mileage car should. These 280ZXs have really aged well and are coming into their own. \r\n\r\nI've owned every generation Datsun Z including a low windshield Roadster and the ZX is by far the best of the lineage. Most people fuss over the 240Z but the 280ZX is a comfortable cruiser that you can actually take on long trips that will not vapor lock, sit in traffic all day, has good HVAC, compliant suspension and 4 wheel disk brakes (the list goes on) and yet has the great reliable straight six and those lovely lines.\r\n\r\nThese early 280ZXs (or S130 as we call them) are cooler yet as they are so rare and feature just the right touch of nickel and chrome on the exterior to compliment the paint and the lines. By 1981 these 280ZX cars were 100% chrome / nickel free. \r\n\r\nIf you are in the market for an appreciating classic that will not break the bank to buy or own and so much fun to take the wife out on date night or \"oooohhh and ahhhhh\" when you pull into your buddy's place for a get together with the friends...buy a 280ZX. It has a few issues concerning originality, but it's still overall an amazing car.\n\nAs noted by many below, the turbo wheels on this ZX are not original to the car. Nor are the rivets holding the front valance to the fenders, which to me indicates past body work. My guess is the body shop broke the valance-to-fender welds to remove the valance when they repaired/resprayed the fender noted by the Seller. Certainly not a big deal, but again, not original. The uneven tow hooks at the front and rear of this car (noted by another BaT member in the comments) also worry me, as I can't think of any reason why they would be uneven like that. Finally, the cat-back portion of the exhaust (or the muffler, at the very least) appears to have been replaced, as the original muffler was a cylindrical shape (not the oval shape seen in pic #3).\n\nAs to the positives of this car (and there are a lot): the original seat covers, shift knob, radio, spark plug wires, original radiator and associated coolant hoses, rust-free spare tire well, and intact original center console lid hinge all point to a very well kept, low mileage, \"original\" ZX. It's certainly one of the cleanest examples I've seen come across BaT lately, and it shows.\n\nUltimately, this car is a mystery as far as mileage goes, and will always be if the paperwork does not surface here. There is simply no evidence for (or against) the 6,500 number other than hearsay and speculation. Taking the evidence in totality provided here, I lean that this is a 106,500 mile car that has been garage kept all its life and seen very little rain. However, it would not surprise me at all if this was a true 6,500 mile survivor. I really do think it\u2019s a nice car overall, but take a look at picture 3 \u2014 the panel under the rear bumper is bent in a couple of places, the bumper itself is higher on the passenger side, and the muffler is clearly not right. That\u2019s three things in a single photo. And in picture 2 the bumper is sitting lower on the driver side, the tow hook area is bent, the plastic piece below the bumper looks new, but there is a huge gap on the passenger side where it meets the metal panel, the entire three panels that have been riveted need to be replaced, and the warped rubber piece on the bumper needs attention \u2014 all of that in a single picture, and yet you don\u2019t mention any of these things. As someone who is admittedly familiar with Z cars, you\u2019d know that these items aren\u2019t as they should be, yet you don\u2019t mention anything about them. Compare the front and rear bumpers in pictures 5 and 7 where they meet the body \u2014 they aren\u2019t level and the gap is different on each side. A huge deal? Who knows, but noteworthy? Absolutely. The fender issue that you actually did mention looks good from what I can tell, but there really aren\u2019t any close pictures of it to be sure.\r\n\r\nNow, after all of this, let\u2019s revisit the mileage. I\u2019ve mentioned the chips on the wiper arms, and the pitting on the amber lights, but zoom in on the panels under the front bumper by the rivets in pictures 1 and 2 \u2014 there are rock chips all across the front. It is impossible to get that kind of chipping in 6,500 miles. Period.\r\n\r\nI was seriously interested in this car, since I\u2019ve been specifically on the hunt for a 1979 280ZX. I like the car, but your lack of transparency is concerning. Couple that with the fact that we received a laughable cold start, a ridiculous drive-by to where we can almost see the car, and no real underbody pics \u2014 I\u2019m out on this one. As for the mileage claim, i have little documented proof, but to state that i spoke to the second owner Mr. Ronald Niemeyer, who told me all that i repeated in this listing and that he turned over the original documents, including the original bill of sale, to the dealer and somewhere between the dealer and the broker who sold the car to me they were not delivered. I attach a photo of the back side of the title transfer where the second owner, Ronald Niemeyer, and the Dealer, Huffmans Auto signed off under notary seal that as of December 2018, the 6511 miles then recorded were accurate and that they \"reflect the actual mileage of the vehicle\".
