First of all to answer your question about options on this Cord. I went to the Auburn, Cord, Packard museum in the summer of 2019 and took my book with me. The curator, Sam Gregg, took my numbers and went to the files to look up my car. As it is a Beverly, the factory allowed custom fitment of items desired by the owners. He came back with this huge grin on his face!! He had never seen factory ordered and fitted arm rests on a Cord. He said the car was built in March of 1937. That puts the car in the group of cars with improved transmissions, by the way. Anyway he found that this car was a custom Beverly Sedan with bustleback trunk and front and rear seat folding armrests. Also the special 1935/ 1936 Auburn Flying Lady hood ornament on the hood. Not supercharged, wheelbase should be 132\". Number matching to factory records. No known sales records for this Cord. We know the car was sold in Oklahoma. I have that gentleman's name on the bill of sale in the Galley. I will get that name for you. It then sold to Fred Van Scoyoc, a professor at Kansas State University. It was known as the Blue Cord Lady during his owner ship of approximately 45 years. Apparantly well known at College as he was a professor! He sold it to a man in Lyndon, Kansas who had it for 30 years, Marvin Hansford. Marvin drove it very little. It had been stored for 25 years when I got it and refurbished it. This is a very, very original, survivor car. The car was mostly worked on by Auburn/ Cord parts inc. from Wellington Kansas. He says the records are somewhere!! He did send me a picture of the car with the engine and transmission out at 53,000 miles on 10.10.75 when Fred owned it. They did at lot of stuff including a new clutch. It has only been driven a couple thousand miles since then. As far as the paint: I can't prove that it was factory painted in this very nice blue. It could have been special ordered. Chuck Henderson from Manhattan, Kansas worked on this car in the 70's for Fred and said that Fred liked the 1954 Cadillac light blue and may have repainted at that time. I have searched everywhere on the car and have not found any trace of any other color. The front fenders were repainted sometime later as that paint is slightly newer. The blue paint in the engine compartment looks to be period. Every trim painted item in this car is blue. Hard to imagine what it would have taken to repaint everything!!! The dash is dark blue, factory color and the Wool seats are dark blue. The dash is stunning with the metal turned dash and the dark blue!! I can say this with great confidence as I was present at the auction near Topeka KS 2 years ago to bid against the fellow who is offering now to sell it. \n\nWhile the car was originally a very plain medium gray (imagine a glossy version of ordinary medium-gray primer), it was Mr. Van Scoyoc who elected to have the car meticulously repainted -- including all jambs & underhood/firewall -- in the shade of Cadillac baby blue lacquer that it still wears today.\n\nThe \"bustle trunk\" is an especially nice feature -- with its required long-bracket rear bumper -- greatly enlarging the available trunk space over the standard \"smooth-back\" Westchester & Phaeton models. I told ronn356 that I would include the name of the original purchaser. It was, according to the original bill of sale, W.H. Denton. Sold on April 24th, 1937 at the dealership of Norman-Young Distributors in Ok. City, OK. I also wanted to add a few more things I thought of that are on this car. It has an auxiliary electric fuel pump that looks factory. Hard line fitted and proper. These engines have mechanical fuel pumps and had some issue when in hot weather and the electric fuel pump solved that. Did I mention the radio and antennae! The Cord, as I understand it, was the first car to have a radio in the dash. This did not happen again until the 1950's. The antennae is under the car on the passenger side. Since there is no drivetrain in the way under there, they could mount this very original and unique series of straps and mounts and springs to power the radio signal without drilling holes in the bodywork!!. Did you see the curb feeler? The interior fan for the passengers! Not sure if passenger side mirror mounted in the sun visor was standard, but this car has it. This car has the 8 louver coffin hood! Some were just 7. The car needed a new 6 volt battery, so I had the front seat out to do a proper install of the biggest 6 volt battery I could find. The wood work and framing and seat adjusters are perfect. What blew me away was that every one of the seat coil springs (round springs) are wrapped in cloth individually!! Hopefully everyone saw the fog lights! I have seen many pictures of Cords without these. The lights and brackets are pristine. Actually all the bright work and the chrome bumpers and unique braces are very nice. I intend to leave the original license plate on the car. It would look good on my wall, but needs to stay with the car. I assume everyone has looked at the perfect condition of the wood in the trunk! The spare tire area and inside of the trunk is a time capsule! I am also including the special tool for hub cap removal. For the record, the hood mascot is 1935-36 Auburn. The only factory approved mascot for the 1936-37 Cord was a small chrome plated brass piece that looked like the tail of an airplane. While not original, the Auburn piece still looks quite nice here. I noticed in pic 74 the front leaf spring has the safety brackets, but no bolts installed. \r\n\r\nIf you look at the green cord 810 that sold on BAT picture 68, you can see them properly installed. The 2 bolts can't be more than $10, but if you have a front end suspension failure, those brackets are intended to keep the springs from potentially ruining your day. It's rare for it to happen, but Charlie Sagenek (Fellow cord owner/rebuilds the superchargers) told me it happened to him once, years ago. The cars were notorious for overheating, especially at low speeds or in city stop-&-go traffic. Some of the reasons were common to many cars of the era, e.g., the old-school \"honeycomb\" radiator cores, which were never as efficient as the later \"tube-&-fins\" radiators. Further aggravating the heat issue was the relatively tiny \"window\" at the front of those coffin-louvers for fresh air to get in to the radiator at all!\r\n\r\nThen there were those novelty aluminum flat heads... >*sigh*< \r\n\r\nThe water jacket inside was quite thin from top-to-bottom (i.e., from above the cylinder-deck to the underside of the visible outer face). When that factor combined with rampant bi-metallic corrosion issues due to the early metallurgy of the OEM alloy, you find the final (overheated) nail under that elegant coffin nose!!\r\n\r\nBy the time the surviving cars reached the late '60s-early '70s, virtually *none* of them still had serviceable cylinder heads, and the need for remediation had become critical. A project was initiated by Glenn Pray in Broken Arrow OK to reproduce an *improved* version of the cylinder heads, to deal with the original faults and get the cars back on their feet.\r\n\r\nThat project was completed and brought to market by Stan Gilliland at Auburn-Cord Parts after he bought out all of Mr. Pray's existing NOS & reproduction parts inventory, and critically, the tooling needed to go fwd with it all.\r\n\r\nStan proceeded to make two (2) *major* improvements to the original design. While the outer face and the underside/combustion-chambers are identical to OEM, Stan gained technical assistance from some Materials Engineers at ALCOA to then spec the best *modern* alloy for the castings, in particular one that would most nearly resist the inevitable electrolytic bi-metallic corrosion caused by aluminum components directly attached to an iron block. The second change was to add 1/2" of material *between* the upper & lower faces of the castings, resulting in a visibly thicker cylinder head and ONE-HALF-INCH GREATER VOLUME, FRONT-TO-REAR, IN THE WATER JACKET.\r\n\r\nThese technical changes were so desperately needed, so greatly effective, and so cosmetically beautiful in their execution that Stan was granted a Special Exemption in the published ACD Judging Guide such that ZERO POINT DEDUCTION was granted for cars sporting the new cylinder heads. They can be easily ID'd by a prominent capital "C" cast onto the outer face, centered front-to-rear above the lower edge, between the 2nd & 3rd spark-plugs. More complements than I have seen on a submission in a very long time.
