When Robert Lewis Stevenson visited the site 100 years earlier he called it, ... the best place in San Francisco. It is where millionaires gather together, vying with each other in display.\u201d Nothing had changed a century later.\r\n\r\nMidway between \u201cBonnie and Clyde\u201d with Warren Beatty and \u201cThree Days of the Condor\u201d with Robert Redford, Faye is riding the crest of her talents when she pulls up in front of the Mark Hopkins Hotel in a Coronation Red Cadillac Eldorado convertible, it\u2019s white top completely down and its white full leather interior fighting with her to see which was most glamorous. Don McLean\u2019s \u201cAmerican Pie\u201d on 8-track is screaming from all six speakers.\r\n\r\nSophia pulled up shortly thereafter, always one to make a statement, in a gold Lamborghini Espada, an unrecognizable Italian opera spilling out of the slightly lowered windows like her cleavage was spilling out of the tight angora sweater she had poured herself into. With its bulbous backlight and massive four liter V12 motor, the car\u2019s performance is as memorable as hers in \u201cMan of La Mancha\u201d which is about to be released.\r\n\r\nAlways fashionably late, Catherine rounds the corner, glides the Citroen into position and, while it self-levels, listens to the last minute or two of (ironically) \u201cSan Francisco\u201d, sung in French by fellow Parisian ex-patriot, Maxine Le Forestier on cassette. A small but exuberant crowd begins to gather around the group of cars and actresses, equally admiring both. Deneuve\u2019s \u201cDirty Money\u201d film is as quirky as her car a couple of ladies in the back note to one another.\r\n\r\nWhy is it the French must approach everything with such an unwillingness to conform? The overall shape of this car hasn\u2019t changed in nearly two decades, but still presents itself as different than anything else offered anywhere. Even something as simple as the steering wheel seems to be giving the finger to conventional automotive norms.\r\n\r\nThe three femme fatales ascend the steps of the hotel as though they are taking ownership, not just lunch. The irony that The Top of the Mark has just recently allowed females entrance to the sweeping 360 degree views of the City by the Bay is not lost on the doorman as he assists them in their grand entrance. The gathered crowds admire the unique style each cinematic goddess displays in their movies, their wardrobe, and mostly their choice of automotive accessories.\r\n\r\nIt is most interesting to see how they have aged nearly a half century later. I have a very old Corniche with these systems and it makes the car. Just incredible. Nothing like feeling a brake pedal that meters pressure to your brakes by opening a faucet of unlimited power, rather than pushing a master piston with your foot. In Citroen, there is no brake pedal at all just a little rubber button. A slight press on the button will put the car to a dead stop, by simply opening a faucet of pressurized fluid and sending it to the brake calipers. Like nothing you could imagine unless you try it. You have to get used to it and once you do it only requires a light touch. Jobs didn't conform, nor has Musk, but Jobs was way more innovative than the latter. Those personalities aside, I keep issuing the challenge for ANYONE to name a product as innovative in totality as the DS19 of 1955 - no one has responded. No one has even TRIED. And everyone seems to have forgotten or never new that the French INVENTED the automotive business: Panhard Lavassor was THE very first true production car co - in 1891. They had the incentive and experience, having been a licensee of Daimler, starting in 1876 by jove, building stationary engines for sawmills and other industries needing something beyond water and wind and horses. \nSo - also being a machine building co. along with wagons, the two products were melded together - mon dieu! What an idea! \nBy 1895 they had built all sorts of different-bodied chassis, and were selling their Daimler-based engines to Peugeot and others. \nThe very beginning of the industry is detailed thoroughly by a recently published book, \"Panhard and Levassor\" , volume 1, called the Brass Era, authored by Vladimir Vershinin. Herein he mentions that another history book lists statistics of 1903, when the French had produced 14,100 cars, the US made 11,325, 2,000 in the UK, 1,450 in Germany, and 225 in Italy. \n\nAnother surprising detail in this tome is that Jean-Louis Perin, born 1816, became a woodworker, then became owner of a woodworking business around 1846, and then saw an 1846 patent by Anne-Pauline Crepin, a French woman, for the basics of the bandsaw. Perin perfected a method for making thin, narrow blades and designed blade guides, & exhibited these at trade shows in 1855. His saws enabled the cutting of hard metals and improved machine building significantly. Perin's company eventually became part-owned by Rene' Panhard, and the building of Daimler engines and the first production cars followed in 1891. \n\nOne could say the French earned their occasional haughtiness the hard way - they earned it! And 64 yrs after the astounding intro of the DS in '55, it still looks like a spaceship, and turns heads wherever one is. Having cut my teeth on my father's '58 DS19 when I was 18, I still haven't seen anything close to the overall success of this design. So it's over 50 yrs old - they'll still cruise at 80 all day long, give 25 mpg without complex, unservicable electronics, provide as much comfort at a good sofa, and go darn near anywhere with their variable ground clearance and FWD. Around summer 1969 I drove my '59 ID19 with all of 70 hp from grad school in Chicago to a Citroen meet in LA. On the way we went over Berthoud Pass in the Colo Rockies. The park rangers warned me not to try the dirt mountain road behind their entrance, for fear of tearing up my oilpan, so I jacked up the car to show them \"no problem\". We straddled wheel-deep ruts by riding the shoulder and middle hump, then crawled up to the summit at 13,000 feet to join a few 4WD jeeps & other offroad beasts, whose jaws dropped when we showed up in our space-age 4 dr, Of course I had to use 1st gear most of the way due to our low hp and torque, but made it witout stopping, whipping around the 180 deg switchbacks without slowing so I didn't get stuck! Gorgeous view up there! \r\n\r\nAfter enjoying the view, we went down rain-slicked shale rockslides very carefully as the rocks were like ball bearings, but made it down thru collapsing mining towns into Durango - sweating a little but not much. Enjoyed the steam train there - one of last in US. \r\n\r\nDrove part of rte 66 on way to LA, & thru Needles Ariz whee it was 110 in the shade. Car wasn't running too hot but we were without AC. A fat Caddy gassed up next to us and had his AC running flat out. A few miles down the road he was pulled over with a boiling radiator - ironic! We passed him & waved. Arrived LA safely with no need to adjust for altitude in Rockies, got about 28 mpg. Cruised at 70-90 all the way on the flats.
