The VIN along with details on this car indicate it is a 1969. That\u2019s why it is titled as a 69. More specifically it is an earlier vs. later 69 as mid-69 marked a transitional period for these cars. I would estimate this car to be close to mid-69. I own a 69 1600, VIN # 1567294, built before this car.\n\nThis car has single circuit brakes, and the brake fluid reservoir is attached directly to the top of the brake master which is mounted directly to the brake booster against the firewall. This configuration was not used on 68 model year 1600s. The 68 1600s had a remote brake booster mounted to the side of the engine compartment with the master brake cylinder mounted directly to the pedal box. \n\nWhile I can\u2019t identify the diff style from the picture angle, what appear to be the narrower mounting ears on the sub frame for the swing arms indicate this is a sub frame for the long neck style diff. This configuration was used up until about mid-69, when they switched to the short neck diff configuration. \n\nThe interior door handles are indicative of a model year 69 or later 02.\n\nThe belt line trim at the front of the nose is indicative of a post - 68 model year 02.\n\nThe steering wheel is indicative of a post -68 model year 02.\n\nThe instrument cluster along with the seats are from a 74-76 model year 02.\n\nMy 69 1600-2, built before this car, has the flush Euro style turn signal lights and no reflectors on the fenders. This car has the later style US mandated turn signals and reflectors on the fenders which started appearing on the US models at about mid-69 model year cars.\n\nYour Lic Plate # \u201cZNU 881\u201d is the original California black plate registered to this car. My 1969 1600-2, which pre-dates your car by about 2,000 cars, also has its original California black plate # \u201cZCU 813\u201d. My plate was issued and assigned earlier judging by the alphabetical order.\n\nThe pictured \u201c118\u201d head on the engine is from a 1600, not a 2.0L. I hope the pictured installed motor is a 1600cc because if someone installed a 1600 head on a 2.0L bottom end they did a great injustice since the 1600 head has smaller valves and ports.\n\nThe pictured crankshaft is a 1600 crankshaft. It has 4 counterweights. The 2.0L crankshafts have 8 counterweights. I can\u2019t tell from the angle if the crankshaft has 6 or 8 threaded holes for mounting the flywheel, but it appears that it may have 8. They switched from 6 to 8 at about mid-69 model year. The pictured crank also has excellent journals. They dodn\u2019t need any work. These are forged crankshafts which were surface hardened by the factory through a special dipping process which is now prohibited by the EPA in the US. This is the identical process used for hardening gun barrels, which is the reason a Glock pistol manufactured in Europe has a much longer barrel life than a Glock pistol manufactured in the US. The quality of these cranks can\u2019t get any better. When machine shops repair scoured and grooved journals they take away the surface hardening which can\u2019t be replicated. Most don\u2019t bother with rehardening. But, when they send out cranks for surface hardening they resort to an inferior hardening process where the cranks are exposed to a substance in a gas state at very high temps which occasionally distorts and ruins the cranks. \n\nBased on everything I\u2019m seeing, this is a 1600cc motor, not a 2.0L, which is a good thing in this case.\n\nThe body appears very solid. It\u2019s a Southern California car from a coastal town where cars rust from the top down. That\u2019s why it has some rust at the front top corner of the hood. \n\nDespite my corrections, I think this is a good and solid car which appears to have a strong motor. And, it has all new bushings. The sway bars are in place with Bilstein shocks. So, it probably handles well. \n\nI consider this 1600 to be a close cousin of my 1600, built just a months earlier. And, I\u2019m located in LA, just 90 miles south of Santa Barbara. But, this does not seem to be the case as the original 1600 crankshaft, in excellent shape, has been left as a spare. So, a possible explanation is that the builder may have retained the 1600 block and used a 2.0 crankshaft with the earlier generation (1963-68) NK1800 pistons, which have the same 84mm diameter as 1600 pistons, but with different pin to deck height to accommodate the longer 80mm stroke. These early 1800 motors used the same \"118\" head as the 1600-2 motor. During 1965 they changed the designation of this head from \"116\" to \"118\" after making a slight change to the shape of the combustion chambers and going to a newer style solid camshaft vs.the older and costlier hollow style. Otherwise the \"116\" and \"118\" heads for the 1800 and 1600-2 have the same ports and valves. To give it extra power the builder may have opted to use the 84mm 1800ti high compression pistons. I'm hoping that this is an early 1800cc configuration vs. a motor with a \"118\" head mounted to a 2.0L block. Their extra weight balances the car better. And, the yoke to the driveshaft can be removed to access and replace the seal beneath it without worrying about the crush collar seated and torqued deeper in the diff by a separate hex nut. This is not the case with the short neck diffs where the same hex nut is shared by both, the crush collar and yoke. When replacing the seal on the short neck, you also have to replace the crush collar. In other words it is much easier to service the long neck diiffs. \n\nUp to some point in 68 all the long neck diff drive flanges were drilled for the early style half shafts with u-joints. But, during 68 BMW started drilling the drive flanges for both,the early half shaft bolt pattern and the later pattern of the CV style half shafts. You didn't really need to replace your long neck to accommodate the later half shafts. You could have had the drive flanges drilled for the newer pattern or simply replaced the entire long neck diff with a slightly more modern one with the newer bolt patter.\n\nMost of the long neck diffs on these cars in the US have the 4.11 gear ratio as equipped for the 1600. There really is a lack of long necks in any other ratio other than 4.11. The 3.64 ratio long neck is pretty scarce as only the 1968 and very early 69 2002s came with a long neck diff in a 3.64 ratio. The 3.90 long neck can be found on some NK cars, but those are also very scarce. Builders are always looking for the 3.90 ratio in limited slip to mate with the 5 speed overdrive trans. So, they just source the 3.90LSD from the e21and swap out to the more common later style sub frame configured for the short neck. It's not the best solution, but, it's the most practical. The alternative would be to source a long neck in 3.90. During the 60s 02 and NK race cars ran long neck diffs. The factory made them in every diff ratio imaginable. But, they stopped producing them in 69. and, most of them are in Europe. BMW installed the short stroke 71mm crankshaft from their 1500 into the 84mm bore block of the 1800 to achieve 1600cc. They de-stroked the 1800 from 80mm to 71mm to create their smoother running 1600cc motor. Later when they created the 2.0L they bored out the 1600-1800 block from 84mm to 89 mm and used the 80mm long stroke crankshaft of the 1800, but doubled the counter weights on the crank from 4 to 8 to better balance the longer stroked big bore 2.0L motor. And, lastly they created the 2nd generation 1800cc in 1969. This later 1800cc uses the 89mm bore block of the 2.0L, but with the short 71mm stroke 1500-1600 crankshaft. \n\nBMW was able to use the same height block in three bore configurations (82mm, 84mm and 89mm. The very first M10 in 1500cc had a smaller 82mm bore block) and two crankshaft configurations (71mm short stroke or 89 mm long stroke) with the same connecting rod length for all motors to create all these different displacements. The transmission wasn't the problem, but rather the linkage. This type of repair does not require the removal of the transmission. It is simple and straightforward. But, the mechanic probably assumed that it was an internal transmission issue, namely a worn synchro between 1st and 2nd gear, a common problem. And, he removed the transmission to get it inspected, only to learn in the end that it was a minor linkage issue. I was bruised and sore but suffered no long-term ill effects. \n\nMy point here is a word of warning to whomever wins this auction. The original rearmost seatbelt mounting point -- just below the rear quarter window glass -- is not a good place to mount these newer, inertia-reel seatbelt system. It could, in fact, cause far more serious injuries.\n\nI know I sound like a mother hen, but having dodged a couple of bullets, I just thought I'd share.
