One guy sees it and off he went.\r\n\r\nThe guy went off on a tear about the world being a better place when Cadillac was its Standard, when they made exceptional cars instead of forgettable SUVs. When having a green car meant Lido Green Metallic, not something you had to plug in at night.\r\n\r\nHe scrolled over to the shots of the interior and said, \u201cThis is what \u2018plaid\u2019 should mean when it comes to cars. Screw Tesla.\u201d Some snickered, others glanced into their coffee hoping for a refill.\r\n\r\nThe guy was on a roll.\r\n\r\n\u201cSays the clock is inoperable. Damn right it is, just like it should be. Time should have stopped in 1975 after this beauty rolled off the line. Things never got any better than this.\u201d\r\n\r\nPeople began shifting in their seats just a bit, hoping that maybe the old guy would tone it down. But no.\r\n\r\n\u201cAmerican cars still ruled the road, just as they were always meant to do.\u201d he said in a pretty loud voice. Then he mumbled something about Mercedes and Lexus and World War II. Not everybody made the connection.\r\n\r\n\u201cDo you see a touchscreen on that dash? Hell no you don\u2019t because buttons and knobs are the only thing that should ever be on a dashboard. And don\u2019t talk to me about Bluetooth. Save it for the dentist\u2019s office.\u201d\r\n\r\nAt this point a young couple asked to be seated in a booth further away.\r\n\r\n\u201cNothing wrong with 8-track. Captain & Tennille never sounded better. Sonny and Cher. The Carpenters. All those married couples that sang together.\u201d\r\n\r\nSomeone pointed out that The Carpenters were actually brother and sister. \u201cI don\u2019t care if they\u2019re from Arkansas or not. They could harmonize better than any other married couple I know.\u201d\r\n\r\nThe waitress asked him to sit down, but he had more on his mind.\r\n\r\n\u201cTires on luxury cars should have white walls. Wider the better. It\u2019s what separates us from the rest of the animal kingdom. Is anything less than 500 cubic inches really even an engine?\u201d\r\n\r\nSomeone mentioned pollution and global warming and fossil fuels. Probably a mistake.\r\n\r\n\u201cThe only reason God created dinosaurs was so they could die and decompose and provide the oil we\u2019d need a few million years later. Re: mileage, the types of repairs done are things that rot due to age. The steering wheel rim wood insert I would like to see a close up photo to confirm its not a restoration as this is very telling of correct mileage. They door panels look original with their wrinkled texture. A low optioned car with the cloth plaid seats that weren't popular in the day and most had leather. But today the plaid is really cool and very appropriate for the era especially with the green color paint. The current owner did it right by finding and assigning the \"correct\" blue and gold CA license plates when he brought it from IL. Current issue white CA plates look as wrong on an old car just as the new current issue black CA plates seen on a late model car look really very wrong (my opinion, no offense to anyone). The only thing I would change would be to remove the catalytic converter and install a bolt-on \"test pipe\". Or remove the fill plug on the CAT, start it and blow out the pellets and drive it \"hollow\". The sticker on the windshield is for the Cadillac Lasalle Club so its a \"Club Car\" and usually a good sign. I used to hang around the local Caddy dealer when I was a kid when these were new. He used to rave about all the different colours and the plaid interiors and so forth. Once in a while he succumbed to the salesman's skill (not that much skill was needed to sell my dad 50s-70s cads with 0 miles on them). By the time I was born he had 6 Cadillacs. He always had to have split seats and cruise (and a/c obviously). In late '75 he went in to order his \" 76 last american convertible\" and was sold an even nicer car already on the lot, which was a used 73 Convert with every option including the burglar alarm, trackmaster, ... everything. (plus split seats and cruise and the scarlet red leather, his favourite). This car had 15k miles but was less than half the price of the new one, and the same colours he was going to order in his 76, plus had every single option, and being an impulse buyer anyhow he couldn't resist. That red leather smelled like candy to me, I was driven home from hospital as an infant in that car. Unfortunately they used very bad steel in the 73 bodies (recycled or something) and when it was 13 years old we sold it before it started rusting or needing paintwork (sold at a profit, which we couldn't have done had we gotten the new 76). Our home street had no speed limit, so everytime we took it out my dad floored it on our street on the way home. That 73 convert was always my favourite. At the time, there were of course many more dealer franchises of every make than there are today. Hanley Dawson was one of the largest Cadillac stores in Chicago.\r\n\r\nOurs was silver with the silver half top, and dark red full leather interior. This was my uncle's car. My dad had a 76 Mark IV at the time, and as kid I really couldn't figure out why anyone would choose a Mark over a Cadillac. I still cannot. The Cadillac had it all. The exterior and interior styling still resonates with me as far superior to any Lincoln of the day. A lot of Tastee Freeze ice cream cones (me) and Pall Mall reds (Uncle George) were enjoyed in that car. To this day, I expect every 1970's Cadillac to smell like Pall Mall's, and am quietly disappointed when they don't.\r\n\r\nUnfortunately, these cars rusted like hell. Cadillac used cheap metal to build the bodies in 74-75, and many cars had early corrosion failures. After 2 repaints/refurbishments (lots of metal work), the old man finally gave up on it in 1989 and sold it for $500 to another coworker at South Water Market.\r\n\r\nYears later as the old man was waning and in the nursing home, I had a hard-loaded 2008 STS-4 for my daily driver. It, too, had corrosion failures on the aluminum hood and around the wheel arches. Plus copious other failures under warranty. The dealer kept fixing it all without complaint, but it was wearing on me. We talked about it one day and I brought up the 75 CDV, and his statement was \"that was the worst car ever, but I loved it. Enough so that I have to add my own. Years ago, my partner in our used car business would buy a \"winter car\" for me each fall. It had to be a big car and as cheap as possible. I would run it through the nasty winter weather here in Maine and sell it in the spring. The game we played was to see how cheap he could buy a car and how much I could make on it in the spring. Usually the cars cost us about $100 to $150 and I would sell them in the spring for a couple of hundred bucks. One fall he showed up with a Sedan DeVille, same color combination as this Coupe. Now, it was not quite as nice as this car, by a long shot, but he paid $35 for it. It was pretty ugly with over 100,000 miles and worn out seats and dull paint, but not rusty, amazingly enough. I put tires on it and a blanket over the seat and ran this car for two years. Much longer than usual; partly because it ran well and partly because I couldn't sell it. The old Caddy was pretty ugly. When I finally did sell it, I think I got $150 for it. It served me well, never failed to start in the cold weather and delivered about 10 miles per gallon.
