I also have the original Strombergs and intake manifold. The Strombergs were rebuilt by Joe Curto. I removed them after about 500 miles and went for the Mikunis. The engine was out of the car and dynoed a second time with the Mikunis and the electronic ignition by PHP Racengines. The engine made an additional 12 HP over the points and Strombergs. I believe the carbs are a nice upgrade over the Strombergs. Some owners used cylinders from Datson, but I liked the Tilton method, there were a few reservoirs included in their kit to choose from. To use Webers or Dellorto carbs you need the Weber head. I heard there is an outfit that can adapt Webers to the Stromberg head. I think either route will cost thousands. The engine builder at PHPRacengines said the Mikunis are producing nearly the same HP as Webers. The Mikunis cost around $1000.00 for the pair with K&N air cleaners and they fit directly to the stromberg head. Webers look very cool but Mikunis give a really good bang for the buck. I haven't connected the choke on the Mikunis yet and I have been able to start it cold in winter most likely because Mikunis have accelerator pumps. The sore spot on all Lotus twin cams is the damn water pump. On the original pump you have to pull the head and front cover to replace it. On the Europa, you have to pull the motor and tranny. Dave Bean designed the cartridge pump so it pops out the front of the front cover. He used the Esprit water pump as his basis\r\n It is much more reliable than the design of the original pump. I have one on the Elan I have now and put them on the last two Elan's I owned. Let me clarify the wheel situation. Currently on the car are five Minilite style wheels from John Brown Wheels in England with Lotus black emblem center caps and chrome lug nuts. I believe these wheels are made in China. The wheels are a square set of 5 1/2 x 13, the tires are staggered Barum Brillantis 2, 185x70 rear, and 175x70 front. I put approx. 1200 miles on these tires, and this is the stock tire and wheel size for the Twin Cam Special. There is also a set of four Cosmic wheels made in England, with Cosmic center caps. These wheels will also use the chrome lug nuts, and this set is staggered. The front wheels are 5 1/2 x13 shod with 185x60 Toyo Proxes R888, and the rear wheels are 6x13 with 205x60 Toyo Proxes R888. These tires have less than 500 miles on them. Lastly, included in the sale, are a set of five 5 1/2 x 13 original Lotus alloy wheels. These wheels are sandblasted and packed in boxes, ready to be finished. I made up some wheel centers for the alloys with yellow Lotus emblems. I don't especially like the look of the stock wheel centers and there are two types, both I believe are available from RD Enterprises in metal and plastic. I then contacted a car detailing guy in FL who used to work for Meguiar's, and he told me to use Meguiar's Show Car Glaze #7 by hand because most likely the paint is laquear and I couldn't ruin it by hand. I slathered it on and removed it by hand seven times and the car looked pretty good. It had a nice shine. My friend who saw the before and after couldn't believe the difference. Does it look like a show car? No. The car has a shine, when I have taken it to car shows it looks very nice. People have videotaped me pulling in, so I would say it has a patina. It is not a concours show finish, it is old, it is original, but it looks good. The cracks are stress cracks which should be normal for a paint job of that age. The disassembled car has been indoors for nearly 30 years. The Mikuni is a great replacement for the Stromberg Carb on the Lotus Twin Cam using the Lotus Twin Cam Head Designed for the Stromberg Carburetor. There is an adaptor plate that mounts the between the Stromberg carb and the cylinder head. It serves two purposes. One, as an emissions device to deliver hot air to the intake charge (not a great idea) and Two as a balance tube/plenum between the two carburetors. You can remove all of the linkage parts from this item, while keeping the balance passage open and use this with the Mikuni carbs.Remember to seal off the hot air intake at the top of this manifold. This does work, but really looks ugly. You can try to source the blalace tube that was used in England/Europe where emissions were not required, but they are very hard to find or you could design your own. That is the route I took. Since I'm a retired mechanical designer doing this sort of thing is in my wheel house. As far as tapping into the vacuum port on the side of each carburetor mount, yes you could do that, I really don't know how well that would function. What I suspect is that you are losing some performance because the carb is mounted too close to the manifold, it should be spaced about an inch away, it just pulls better. More torque I suspect. Since you need a one inch spacer anyway, why not make it your balance pipe/plenum? I'ts the route I took. The Mikuni conversion works better than and is more powerful than the Strombergs, and is perfect for a car that is go to be driven and enjoyed. but its not as powerful as the Weber/Dellorto Lotus Twin Cam Cylinder Heads. They just have so much better flow. No matter how well maintained/restored they may be like this one, the sad truth is that Europas (all flavors) don't bring more than $25 or $30K, with a few exceptions that are 1+ concours cars. IMHO they are simply too small for people with average or larger feet or girth, ingress and especially egress is difficult especially for elderly owners, they are not convertibles and very few have air-conditioning so they are relegated to being useful only during spring and fall seasons in most locations here in the US. I wish it were otherwise because they are great fun to drive especially compared to modern cars like my 2020 Evora GT. But in a nice way, being able to access that quality of design, handling, and sheer point-to-point speed for $25,000 for a good runner, and probably around $50,000 or so (if you exclude labour!) for one as good or better than it left the factory is a remarkable bargain in today\u2019s market - and a quiet luxury for those that know. Yes, you may not get back every dollar, but what price the pleasure of driving one of the best of an era and holding that in your memory when you\u2019re too old to drive it any longer?
