The principal advantage of electronic as far as I can see is the programmable advance curve. I have had the photocell on an electronic ignition fail on occasion, leaving me stranded at the side of the road. I've never had a points ignition completely fail like that. The other advantages of retaining the points ignition are wiring simplicity and weight saving. This bike was built for riding, and since the chromoly frame components already got the weight-saving ball rolling, we decided to carry on with saving weight: using points ignition has no control module, saving a pound or two, the single twin output coil weighs about half as much as the two Bosch blue coils originally specified, the starter relay (from a Yamaha FJ1200) saves a few pounds compared to the surprisingly heavy original-equipment relay. All in all, this bike is about 40 pounds lighter than a real SFC, I believe. Relocating the battery box about 3 inches lower than the stock SFC position also helps lower the centre of gravity a bit. Velocett seems to be basing his comment on his recollection of riding (or maybe just observing?) SFCs back in the 1970s - about 50 years ago. I rode this bike last week and wasn't bothered at all by vibration, which is about as much as you'd expect from a big vertical twin of that era. I'm sure that different riders have different 'thresholds.' My buddy and I rode this bike (his) and its identical twin (mine) for a weekend trip down to the Glenn Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport, New York last summer. The photo of the two bikes with the bandstand in the background was taken on that ride, by the way. We took a meandering route on two-lane roads the whole way (a great ride!) and covered about 1000km (600 miles +/-) in two days, so either we have extremely high 'thresholds' or the vibration wasn't all that bad. I'm turning 75 in a few weeks and he's just a young pup of 68, by the way. Perceptive BAT viewers will no doubt have noticed that this not a Gold Wing. Certain other Laverda riders back in the 70s didn't seem to be too handicapped by the vibration. Laverda ran factory bikes a lot like this one in endurance races of up to 24 hours duration and often won (until the Japanese fours got seriously involved) back in the day. In 1970, they ran four factory bikes in the 24 hour endurance race in Oss, Holland.
