Among the Elises, Evoras and Esprits was a 1959 Elite RHD. \n\nDespite having but 1,221 cc\u2019s, and skinny little 155/80 section tires, Tim hounded a nearly new Evora with about 400 horsepower and fat 235/35 section tires over hill and dale. I was following directly behind them and pedaling pretty hard in my turbo Elan M100 to keep up. \n\nThe Elite was so far ahead of its time it is relevant 61 years after it was made. I guess that Chapman fellow knew what he was doing, eh? Now I believe what Stirling Moss said about his driving his Elite back to London from Snetterton: \u201cI averaged 65 miles an hour and never went over 70!\u201d\n\nThis is a beautiful, landmark car that still has not received the recognition it deserves for what it represents in the advancement of the automobile. TUDOR plastic water bottles in a metal frame were secured to the engine bay side for the windscreen washer and operated by a manual pump placed with difficulty to use, just under the clutch petal. An MGA would do it in about 15 and an AH Sprite was more like 20. Besides this is a momentum car..see my post earlier. If you had been with us on Sunday you wouldn't be thinking this is slow for its age I promise.\r\n\r\n@andy_m1 This is a standard single SU that has been upgraded with twin Webers and tubular headers so I suspect it is making more power than an SE even though I don't know what cam it has. The MG gearbox is nice but having replaced the one in my Elite with a ZF I can say with certainty there is nothing like the ZF. It is simply sublime. Always pleased to offer my 40+ years of experience with the Type 14. Probably, no one has made all the possible Elite Errors, 14 or more times, than I with my 10 cars over time. Have 31 TSA inspection certificates from my various domestic and overseas visits. I have watched my Lotus Luggage on the security devices and I would open them immediately. \r\n\r\nI can verify from many engine dyno tests the advertised original 75 BHP in standard form, the 85 HP in SE and then the 95, 100 and 105 HP for the Super Cars, having had a couple of 95's and 100 and my vintage race Elite.\r\n\r\nAll Elites were fitted with a mild steel 6.26 gallon gas tank. The early S1 and S2 cars had a chrome twist on cap, similar to the MGA. The later SE cars were fitted with a 2.5 inch \"Monza\" style flip top. Super Cars, were fitted with the 10 gallon alloy tank and a huge 3.5 inch Ferrari type \"Monza\" flip cap, similar to those on a Cobra. This alloy tank was a factory option. No gas tank caps were recessed, except the failed front wing tanks. Dennis did his and I did a couple on my Elite/Elans. \r\n\r\nThe gearbox as noted in my World Register records, which I still keep on 5 x 8 index cards shows a close ratio item. I cannot confirm this. It does have the often lost. original Magnette mushroom shift knob. Yes, the ZF S4-12 is a sweet gearbox. it was also fitted to 98 Israeli Sabras., with a different magnesium bell housing. \r\n\r\nBeing a Chief Concours Judge for 35+ years, if anyone wishes my observations, please ask. Jay Chamberlain sold this Elite to a Trans World Airline (TWA) pilot based in Kansas City, Missouri. The pilot flew TWA\u2019s transatlantic New York-London-Frankfurt route and was a serious British motor car enthusiast. He removed the cylinder head from his Elite and took the head with him on a flight to London, England. Once in London, he dropped off the head to Brabham\u2019s Racing Development Company. Brabham modified the head to racing specs and a five-bearing cam, then added twin Weber Carburetors.\r\n\r\nThe owner of Premier confirmed to me that the five bearing head was still intact during the engine rebuild. All Elites had the boot completely finished in gray ribbed Armacord or Harduura, including a covering over the petrol tank. This same material was used on the top of the spare tyre cover and the angled panel behind the seats.\r\n\r\nAll Elites had the engine bay in black matt (satin) finish as was the dash scuttle.\r\n\r\nThe entire interior above the dash and blue/green short loop carpet was finished in a pebbled gray paint.\r\n\r\nThe door seal appears to be missing the rubber bulb.\r\n\r\nHeater control pull knob and cable were always installed on the right side of the tunnel under the dash, about knee height. \r\n\r\nI could not offer any comments to the inquires about the Lady Climax without some test results, such as: compression and leak down data, operating temperature, oil pressure at cold and hot.\r\n\r\nHope the new custodian will remain in touch with Club Elite.
