They were driven hard by anybody and everybody, delivering parts and such to jobsites. Over 18 years we went trough 3 of them with this exact motor/transmission package, and the last one I bought was still in use when I left the company. You just can't kill these drivetrains. The first one I bought at an auction with 50K miles on the clock. Over the years, the bed had to be repaired over and over again because jobsites were dumping stuff too big and heavy for it, and we finally had to park it because some idiot dropped a 300 series backhoe bucket in it, crushing the cab. When parked five years later, this truck was still running fine, and had 530,000 miles on it. Over that time period we put only 2 clutches in it, and three timing belts. Two of those failed on the road, but it's a non-interference engine so no damage as a result. The tranny still shifted perfectly, and the head was NEVER taken off. We did of course also replace plugs a couple of times, changed oil, filters, and such occasionally, but I don't remember if we ever had to change even a water pump. Just incredibly durable trucks, and I own one today for personal use. It's got 195K miles on it, no leaks, zero oil burn, and tight as a drum. The 5-speed Rangers all suffer from what appears to be a minor leak. If I remember correctly it originates from the shifter rail plugs. I may be wrong, but it is from 3 plugs in that vicinity that were corrected by replacing the rubber plugs with metal cup plugs. Thousands of recorded failures because the gearbox was run low on fluid and the owner had no idea because most of the fluid loss occurs while driving. It's an easy correction that any trans shop has done hundreds of time back when these populated the roads. At the very least, ensure the fluid level is correct and have this minor correction performed sooner rather than later. I don't remember all the details, but I think the repair only took a few minutes and the trans remains in place, so it's no big deal but needs to be done.", "likes": 7, "timestamp": 1620146330,
