These early ones had an interesting blow-through carburetor setup where instead of modifying the carburetor to work correctly with boost passing through the bores but not the fuel bowls, they simply stuck the whole carburetor inside a box that the turbos would pressurize. Of course, that means your linkages have to pass through grommets into that pressurized box as well, so I imagine copious leakage is possible 30 years later. I have a friend who had one. It was fun while it ran, but at some point a V-belt decided to jump out of its groove and wedge itself into the timing cover, thus getting eaten by the timing belt which then jumped time and bent all the valves. My brave friend continued on piecing together the parts to get it running again but eventually gave up after learning what a tremendous PITA it was to properly set the valve lash. From what I can tell it is truly a labor of love that's required to keep one of these things running properly. Wrecked the first one at Watkins Glen last May when we hit a wall avoiding a rookie who has spun in front of us as we were chasing him down. We were five laps ahead in class at the time. The 87 BiTurbo you saw at Road America is the second one we are running with a fresh build -- and it is blistering fast. We had almost no prep and no chassis setup and we ran 2:53s on Sunday -- about as fast as anyone else there. Ran flawlessly until we ran out of fuel early and then blew an alternator belt (twice). We had it retrofitted with an off-the-shelf Delco, and they have been much more trouble than the original. The reputation that these had is really not well deserved. By 187 they were fuel injected, and the engines are a very powerful 2.5l 90 degree V6 with the ability to take about 14psi of boost with no problems (other than using fuel like crazy). The bottom end of the engine is really stout, the ZF dog-leg transmission is great, and in the 87, the Torsen-based sensitrack differential is really advanced for its time. I have a liquid intercooled 85 at home that looks identical to this, with a suede 87 interior in it. It gets lots of looks, questions, and attention at car shows. Car was always parked in garage, never taken out in the rain. It really is super clean. The plastic that covers the suede on the doors is still there. My father really took care of this car. One of the cars belonged to an Embry Riddle Aeronautical student. That car was highly modified with intercooler and all the stuff. It was an absolute beast so much fun. They are pretty simple machines. The valve gear is a bit strange. 3 valves per cylinder if I remember. 2 intake valves actuated on the rim of the lifter bucket and 1 exh valve actuated by the center of the lifter bucket as normal. Tricky when doing a valve job. Engine out for any turbo service but very easy to do. Tons of power and torque. Trust me from experience. I drove the snot out of mine up to the day I traded it for an Acura Legend 2 door manual trans car that I modified with coilovers. I loved my Maser, red/caramel, '85 BT intercooled, supposedly rated at 200HP, which was way off based on observation. More like 240 HP. The list of parts replaced in 2.5 years on and off warranty was staggering and I could outline them here, but won't for brevity's sake. Mind you nothing outside of the engine compartment. The final stroke was the death of the main fuse panel. Parts became difficult to get when Maserati pulled out of the US including that fuse panel. The car was fun, but be forewarned that, driven aggressively, repairs are high. Make sure you have a steady source of parts, especially belts and tensioners. My car literally spend 2 days per month in the shop for some failure.
