The write-up states that the backfire protection valve was \"replaced\" in 2020, but actually it was installed for the first time then, due to the recommendation of the mechanic who did the top end rebuild and head stud replacements. I was a bit reluctant, for the sake of originality, since the air box had survived for 42 years without the valve, but he did a great job. The Carrera chain tensioner update was performed in 2006 at Maplewood Imports (local Porsche dealer). The dash top - yeah, what a head-scratcher! It's quite nice except for that area over the center vent - and the prior owner said it was that way in 1990 when be bought the car in CA. My guess is that Porsche had some issues with shrinkage on the full-dash leather on these early 911SCs and must have made some adjustments along the way. The leather is folded and stitched along the seam - it probably shrank to the point where that seam was separated to expose the leather underneath the fold. The leather is all there (no gaps), but the outline of the stitching is visible in front of the original seam, and it's worn around the top of the center vent. Then, during the rest of the year, there are many days that aren't very good for driving - which comes down to personal preference, but I want to drive classic cars on nice days. Further, I don't run short errands in collector cars, but try to drive 25-50 miles at a time. And until recently I had 3 classic cars plus our two daily drivers, and then there's travel and other life commitments that take time away from the driving. So, it's been challenging to put on many miles. I tried wet sanding and touch-up paint, but it never looked right and really bothered me. When discussing the job with the paint shop, I asked them not to blend the paint onto the adjoining panels, since this was an original-paint car and I wanted to preserve its originality as much as possible. Upon purchase, this car had two cosmetic flaws: the passenger door around the handle and the leather dash above the center vents. I can live with the leather imperfection, as it's normally not that noticeable (illuminating it and taking a picture puts it in the worst possible light). I had a 76S with 180k mi ownership since 1984, I\u2019ve always wanted a Carrera G50 and finally got to drive one a bit with a club member, to my surprise although more refined, it was significantly heavier and not much faster. Shortly afterward I drove a SC with web cam 20/20 grind, SSI exchangers, and MK muffler. Wow\u2026it was so lively both engine and chassis, Bruce Anderson was right! With my low mileage SC and being in California, I have to smog check every two years. She passed with the original cat. easily, I would love to do the modifications in I\u2019m in another State. But something about any stock, unrestored, low mileage vehicles, IMHO they drive better than restored cars while takes you back in time or may be older now I\u2019ve learned to shift correctly and respect the 915 transmission. Not many 44 years old cars including the more $$$ 308, are still as modern with drivability today as the SC. She\u2019s not fast but felt solid everything still tight especially closing the doors with the \u201cping\u201d sound, the SC wide body looks better than the earlier impact bumper model yet still light weight. I think she\u2019s best of the mid year, the 3.2 gained weight but will come alive with a Steve Wong chip and aforementioned mods. Yours no doubt is special with the leather dash, wheels etc. I would just do a professional touch up like you suggested, no point redo the leather then it won\u2019t match the rest of the car. It\u2019s hard to part with a SC, they build a lot of them but they are truly special and very few like yours.
