As long as the mechanical's have been re built correctly most of the issues/concerns would take a few weekends to sort out. Looks like a TR6 Master cylinder which is a common choice and the interior console etc is from a MK II car although i do not remember the console lid being fake wood grain. The underside and floors look excellent and the re paint is very thorough but the colour would not be my first choice. The sills/rockers should be black and the bumpers and lower valance should be satin black all easily remedied if so desired. The seller should have installed the stainless top spare front bumper he has before listing, those lights will not help the sale. I worked at Jensen Motors when these were starting to be produced in late 72 i believe and the JH was the answer Kjell Qvale (the owner of Jensen) wanted to fill his California West coast showrooms with and replace the popular Austin Healey 3000 which had gone out of production in 1967. As it was rushed to production and a suitable engine that would pass US emmisions could not be found for the low slung bonnet until Lotus came along with their 907 2.0 liter twin overhead cam slant four valves per cylinder came along. Lotus was a small facility at the time in the Norfolk UK countryside and they employed farm workers and whoever to keep up with production demands which were so demanding that Colin Chapman supplied the engines with no warranty that was all on Jensen's shoulders. The MK I engines suffered cam seizures and we had cars on the end of the production line with compression's all over the map which turned out to be that they were not grinding/seating the valves in at the factory. The rear axles used to hum but when Vauxhall (suppliers) installed the same one in a saloon car of theirs they didn't hum anymore or less you just couldn't hear them humming, the answer was to add soundproofing. By the time the \"MK II\" (there never was a MK II just the improved version) came along all the teething troubles and out of control warranty claims were drastically reduced but by then it was too little too late and in 1976 Jensen closed it's doors with i might add a full years worth of orders for the Interceptor which had been supporting the Healey for 4 years. Sad really they were both great cars in their own rights but labour relations and trying to get parts for a firm going out of business was a mamouth task. Back to this car it has all the right things done to it mechanically just needs a few tweaks in the over use of colour imo, still a great car with apparently no rust issues. The 2.0 liter is not a torquey engine and has to be revved to achieve decent performance. Not sure what the performance figures are for the 2.2 liter but i am sure those extra cc's help. I hear a lot of bad mouthing about the 907 engine specifically and the JH in general, but the race engine has done three lemons races with only the exhaust breaking at the header. That's about 1800 miles of hard ass racing plus three days of practice as well. Love the engine, but it does require care. Was always reliable and never let me down. Any of those early production problems have long been fixed on any road worthy JH. I'm surprised nobody brought up the plastic fuel T. Many JH's died a premature death due to engine fire when the plastic fuel T cracked and sprayed gas on the engine.\n\nYears ago you could find quite a few cars in the junk yards. Usually with the head off and burnt valves. This was usually the result of incompetent mechanics setting the carbs way too lean when trying to pass smog, which resulted in burnt valves. They were a real bitch to pass smog especially when they had a few miles on them. It was a big relief when Cali changed the law so '75 and older cars were smog check exempt. \n\nAny of the cars that have survived to this point are usually very well sorted.\n\nThis car has all the heavy lifting done already - as far as upgrades go. The Toy 5-speed, Dell'ortrs, and 2.2L kit all make it a much better car. And it wasn't that bad in stock form to begin with. Not many early 70's sports cars with a 7K redline, and the lotus 907 motor sounds superb at the limit.\n\nI'm surprised the bonnet fits as well as it does. The fiberglass ones never seemed to fit that well. Whoever layed up those parts knew what they were doing. Why Kevlar? Why not! It's lighter and stronger than fiberglass. The guy I bought it from (you out there, Mark?) did all the machine work on the engine but then sold it to me to help fund a Lotus Esprit (which he recently retrieved from the box it had been stored in for 25+ years but that's a different story).\r\n\r\nMy dad had discouraged me from buying the car, but warmed up to it once I dragged it home. He helped reassemble the engine and put the car back together. On one of our first test drives, he was driving when someone pulled up next to us at the light. In it's day it was reasonably fast, and not many people knew what it was. \r\n\r\nAfter college I got a job out of state, The car remained with my parents for a few years, then got dragged across a few states when I bought a house. I put some effort into getting it back on the road but motorcycles were my new passion so I ended up selling it after I dragged it back to my parent's house following another job change.\r\n\r\nThe new buyer had it checked out by a local shop. They replaced the battery and tweaked a few things - on the prospective buyer's dime! Apparently he was truly interested in the car. I drove it home, and my first thought was \"I can't sell this! It is in excellent condition and was very hard to find, I new that sooner or later the lights would come off but I did not removed them because I thought the new owner could chose to save the extra chromed layer. The 2 holes that hold the lights can be easily covered with chromed buttons like the ones used on displays window or bathroom mirrors to disguise the holding screws. The yellow lights are bolted to a hidden metal bar that uses existing factory body holes no extra drilling anywhere.. The prior owner was an Aeronautical Mechanic Engineer and as such he did things the right way including the color coding on components. Rattle coloring to me too. But he was the owner and he used hos prerogative. The car had all I wanted and was very expensive to do and at the time parts were no where to be found. Delta Motors didn't have them neither the Jensen Preservation. I sourced the original roll bar, black top, sway bars, extra original seats, front bumper chromed layer. Car came with an small airplane oil cooler , I changed it for a better and bigger one. Shortly into the drive, the passenger side front brake locked up and had to pull off to the side of the road. \n\nNot being too mechanically inclined and having no tools with me, I started scrolling through my phone for my tow companies number. Some cat drives up, kids in the backseat, and asks if I could use some help. Being a skeptical New Yorker, told him I was fine and would call for a tow or limp the car back to the garage. \n\nHe insisted and I acquiesced. \n\nAfter going back to his garage nearby and grabbing a spanner, bled the brake on the side of the road, and sent me on my way.\nToday that guy is now my own personal Ed China. \n\nA top end rebuild, all brakes bled, and a new/rebuilt starter and my JH is one of the more reliable vehicles in my stable. \nI can't believe with 40 to 50 years behind our cars in our hobby and cars are still being talked about how crappy/poor quality they were! \nThe bugs have been worked out, an aftermarket exists, and a support group with the click of a mouse is there to answer any questions.\n\nJensen Healey's are enjoyable, sporty little cars to drive. There are J-H clubs, mailing lists and forums, but they all seem to have blinders on when it comes to the 907 engine. The J-H manual was written once and never updated, but the 907/ 910/ 912 engine continued in production for another 20 years after the J-H went out of production. There's much to be learned by getting your head up out of the out-of-date J-H Workshop Manual's engine section. Get a copy of Lotus' Technical Data Section - A (TDA), along with the engine sections of later Lotus manuals.\n\nAt the very least, ignore the J-H manual's specs for timing belt tension, and for cylinder head retaining nut torque.\n\nBack in the 1960s/ early 70s, Jensen's cars were all powered by large Chrysler V8s. When the first 'oil crisis' hit, sales of Jensen gas-hogs tanked. Jensen had also made the bodies for the Austin Healey and the Volvo P1800, but those models were also out of production by then. With virtually no sales, the company was in financial trouble and heading for receivership. Kjell Qvale tried to rush the under 2 liter, 4 cylinder Jensen-Healey into production as a car that was more appropriate for the times. The fate of his company was hanging on it's success. The car was about ready, but he had yet to make a deal for an engine & drivetrain.\n\nLotus announced that they were developing their own engine for a future model, the Elite, but the Elite was still two years away. Qvale approached Lotus about buying the engine... it wasn't Lotus/ Chapman who approached Qvale.\n\nLotus had hand-built 904 & 905 sand cast engines running, and doing very well in early testing. But the production diecast tooling was not yet complete, and Lotus were also building a brand new CNC machine shop just for producing the 907's parts. All running prototype engines had been lovingly hand-built by engineers. The next round of test engines would be the first to use diecast parts machined by the new machine shop, and the first ones built by the assembly line workers. Lotus had three rounds of pilot production/ validation testing scheduled before putting the engine into it's own car... years, not months down the road. The engine was clearly not ready for prime time.\n\nQvale was desperate for an engine, and he lobbied hard and loud for Lotus to sell the 907 to Jensen. Tony Rudd, the engineer in charge of the 907 project, was red-in-the-face, fist-pounding adamant that the engine was no where near ready, and initially, Chapman backed-up his engineer. But Qvale persisted forcefully, and eventually Chapman, his company always strapped for cash, caved in. But he refused to accept warranty responsibility for an untested, unproven engine that his engineer said wasn't ready. If Qvale wanted the 907, he could have it at his own risk.
