To answer a few questions: No, the auto currently in the car is not the original trans. It was built from a 1967 core that I had. As to why convert back to an auto? It is an issue with my knee. The manual was just fine and the clutch was ok until would get stuck in traffic, and if you live or drive is Southern CA, you can't go anywhere without getting stuck in traffic. So I had a friend build the trans and I did the conversion to make it drivable for myself. No, I don't have a limp wrist, just a bad knee.\n The car was originally an auto and owner number two swapped the 4-speed into it. I bought the car in 2001 and the current SAAC registry (1997) showed it to be a manual. When I got it home, I discovered it had a Ford toploader instead of the Borg Warner T10, but I just figured the T10 went south and one of the previous owners replaced it. No big to me as the Ford gearbox is much stronger. Several years later I received some shipping documents from Howard Pardee at SAAC and it showed to be an auto. So... I started to track down previous owners and found owner #2 in the LA area. He told me and later gave me a written history of the car while he owned it. He bought it as an auto because it was insurance and father friendly at the time. Then at a later date found an owner of a manual trans car that was into drag racing and wanted the auto. They pulled both cars in to a shop one night and did the swap over night. So that's how and why about the trans. BTW, when I converted it back to an auto, I saved every part to put the 4-speed back in. That includes the trans, bell housing, flywheel, clutch, pedals (all three), all linkage, and radiator. It also includes a Hurst Competition Plus shifter that I installed when I bought the car. \n This is not a \"show\" car but a very nice driver. I bought it with no intensions of ever getting rid of it and basically refurbished and modified what I wanted to make my car. I have come to the realization that my son is in no position to take it and I find myself into retirement.\n As for the rear gears. I like to drive 70 on the freeway so the 3:50's were a little short. The Detroit Locker didn't bother me as it was not my first to live with. I was going to build a new 3:25 for the car but sitting in my shed was a good low mile 3:00, so I put that pumpkin in to try it and really kind of liked the ratio. And I'm the guy that used to run 4:56 DL on the street in high school, go figure. So the 3:00 never bothered me and I thought the car still had sufficient acceleration that I just left it. That is the story about the gears.\n Now the engine. I bought the car in the Hollywood area and drove it home to San Diego County. I shad the original engine in it and showed 99xx miles on it when I took off for home. The odometer turned over to 100000 on the way home. I knew the original engine was a treasure and I didn't want anything to happen to it, and sitting on an engine stand in my garage was another 289 that I was building for another car. So, I decided to pull the original engine and install the spare engine with the idea if I put a rod through the block, I would be bummed out but not devastated. Better cruising gear and no locker. Auto trans swapped back in if you didn't want to row gears in a cruising car. Bigger gas tank can kind of fit into that as well. You don't have to worry about scratching the original paint either. Thinking it was a 4-speed car, I located a correct Holley 715 with a date code of 633, that I believe is March, 3rd week, 1966. I sent it to Pony Carburetors for rebuilding and replating. That is what is on the car now and it runs great, although might be a little on the rich side. After discovering that it was born with the auto trans, I believe it should have an Autolite 4100 4bbl with a manual choke. The owner I bought the car from, could not produce a picture or any body shop invoice, even though I asked several times. He told me that the left fender and the bumper were damaged and that was it. This is when the car was repainted to white/blue stripes and the R model front apron was installed. He said the blue was starting to show its age and really wanted it white. ( I wish it were still blue, my favorite color for these). When I bought the car, I unbolted the right fender and lifted it up enough to read the Ford VIN. I called Howard Pardee at SAAC, gave him the number and he confirmed over the phone that it was correct. The same Ford VIN is also on the block. I have looked very carefully at the car and I see no evidence of the aprons or core support being replaced, if they were, the body shop did a really nice job. I have never removed the Shelby tag but you can see the Ford stamping from underneath. Also, when I painted the engine compartment, I had removed the front fenders and front valance. If I remember right, the Ford VIN (second stamping) on the left apron was just fine. This stamping is hidden by the fender and only visible when the fender is removed. Yes, there are two stampings on the left apron and only one on the right apron. I had pictures of these but were lost in a computer crash 15 years ago.
