The MB ESC system has been around now for about 20 years, while it has gotten more refined, less intrusive, and is great at preventing you from doing something stupid at speed - I still find that it doesn't work very well at putting the power down under certain conditions where an LSD really excels. The ESC starts by killing the power (formerly by retarding timing, not sure if it still uses this approach), and then braking the wheel which is slipping to create resistance and 'fake' the effect of a limited slip by juggling the power around. Turn off the ESC, and it no longer retards power and only uses the brakes to maintain traction.
