My first car was a 69 Fairlane Hard Top 302/2 barrel auto on the column, it too had to have the shift lever held to the left in park to start. Ford had a recall on these cars back in the day because the park pin was not fully engaging in the transmission allowing the car to start rolling on inclines. If I remember it was a matter of making sure the linkage bushings were in good shape and adjusting the linkage to ensure the lock pin engaged fully, that could be the simple fix for this car not fully engaging in park to allow it to start. With the single exhaust the car would top out at 110 mph. The only modification I did was to put dual exhaust on that 302, once I did that car would bury the 120 mph speedo, the duals freed up that much horsepower!
