Anywho, think those of us who believe the W116 series the best hand built S-Klasse that roamed the Earth back in the \u201870\u2019s have preached as to its\u2019 merits. The Turbo Diesel cars just added the extra angle of possible EPA worthiness to the selection process. Recall going to the \u201cZone\u201d for CE on a new Mercedes Parts Package required of all dealers. The gearheads wanted to race a 300SD against a 450SEL head to head outside of the Zone on a deserted road. Actually found one and off they went. The 450SEL took the lead off the mark but the torquey grunt of the Turbo Diesel caught up quickly. Top end went to the V8 where the EPA went to the Diesel. The great thing about the updated diesel motor was the common rail injection system and newer generation glow plugs. Engine didn\u2019t have the knocking sound of earlier diesels which could have been a turn off for prospective buyers. \n\nA cursory look at this lady seems to show everything in order. Fairly tidy, neat and orderly. Undercarriage could use a dry-ice treatment to get into the nooks and crannnies of everything. To sum up IMHO, looks like the car lived a fairly nice life in CA. Would love our \u2018Benz aficionado, @UncleFred1 to have a gander and give us his impression. He has this knack for cadmium on car parts to judge dating etc. A fun car to drive today and comfortably into the future. Suppose it would be considered a significant piece of Automotive History for Mercedes-Benz. Not completely unheard of in the US market, mind you (like Mimosa Yellow), but still quite rare to see. It was only available in 1980 and 1981.\n\nEven rarer is a W126 in this color, since by the early '80s, warm hues like this had begun to fall out of fashion. I saw an Inca-Red-on-Brazil-Leather 1981 300SD for sale locally last year, but it was very rough cosmetically. I think the majority of cars that were painted this color (though still a tiny minority overall) were the W123 and C123. I remember seeing a final-year 450SL too.\n\nIt's a love-it-or-hate-it color, and I think as time has passed, most people have warmed up to it. It has always reminded me of In-N-Out's spread sauce, even though I know that's a much lighter shade. The car had mostly sat for 15 years with the original owner's son. We went through absolutely EVERYTHING to freshen it up, and I've put 32,000 effortless kilometers on it since. It's 45 years old, yet I'd hop in and drive from Vancouver to Miami Beach without a worry -- something I couldn't say about a 5-year-old S-Class. You simply cannot buy a car built like this for any amount of money today. Super easy to use and put miles on, economical to run and service, quite good for long journeys, lots of \"olde-worlde\" charm that's missing from the (better on paper) 126. It's a classic car cheat code.\r\n\r\nThis is such a cool example for all the reasons stated.
