I'll generally accept my local dealers' fee of around the $100-$150 area as they pay someone to pay the taxes and process the paperwork for the state to send me the title, rather than my having to (make an appointment often a week or more out nowadays and) go to the local tax office to do so myself, so there is a convenience factor. In most cases it's possible to compound the areas with acceptable results, but not all cars. And worse, on cars with multistage pearl paint (RYP), the pearl finish wasn't always applied uniformly on the windshield frame. Some of the cars I saw had spots where the paint had been sanded to flatten nibs, which presumably would have made a bump in the tape. In several of these cases, the sanding marks went underneath the windshield molding, meaning it was done prior to the windshield going on at the factory.
