The Suzuki SV650 is a more modern version of this in many ways, also handling very well and making significantly more power. Many of them were used in racing. Not too many of the 650 Hawks were raced by comparison, but some were. I watched a couple of guys run one at Laguna Seca a long time ago in an endurance type race. I think the seating on this bike might be a little more friendly than the SV650, but seats and rider size make a huge difference. A V-twin engine, especially like this and the SV, are the bomb to ride. Just awesome. Not long after I bought it I fell into a great deal on a blue '00 Suzuki SV650 exactly like the one you show pictured below, (I'd wanted one for years as the step-up to my first bike, a Suzuki GS500). When I got the SV650 I assumed I'd ride it and the Hawk GT for maybe one season to compare them, then sell the one I liked less. 16 years later and I haven't been able to decide, so I still have them both. On paper the SV650 is faster / better in most measurable ways, but the Hawk is just fun to ride and is a great-feeling little machine. For anyone on the fence, I'll mention that I'm 5'10\" and can ride both comfortably, but if I was much shorter the Hawk would probably be a better fit, and if I was much taller I'd definitely prefer the SV650. I can understand why these were a tough sell brand new (I think they were only $500ish less than the fully-faired CBR600s when new?), but they have definitively earned their cult-like following in the years since, they really do feel great to ride. This one looks like a wonderfully clean example, I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around these all being 34 to 37 years old at this point.
