I was 11 or 12 and the concept of 1 down 4 up was confusing to me. On the M50, the left grip rotates along with the clutch lever to select gears with neutral (0) being in between 1st and 2nd. So simple to ride or drive anything else after that! I was the only person in my driver's ed class in 1980 that could drive the 4 speed Chevette.
