The seller was a customer of Powertech in Rockaway, NJ for many years then moved out of state. Prior to the owner moving, Powertech informed him that it would top end reseal (not rebuild) in the future. The owner felt it was too far to bring the car back to NJ for the work, so he had a local shop to him work on it. This shop told him he needed a top end rebuild, pulled it apart and it sat for a period of time and was never completed. One of the owners of Powertech then went down, picked up the car on a trailer and a pick-up bed full of parts (including new piston and cylinder set), then they completed the rebuild and the other work as noted on the invoice. I had the engine out of my 1988 930 at 60K miles as well and replaced the pistons/cylinders, all kinds of oil lines, addressed the injectors, then did some bolt-on upgrades while the timing was ripe so I wasnt putting old choking parts back on. Was a completely preventive effort of about $20,000. Nothing wrong with the car. Ran fine. Just felt better to address things before they fail and with the engine out to address a few annoying leaks, decided to make the car completely bulletproof for another 60-100K miles and never have to worry about it. That was 12yrs ago and this was and is a concours car with more ribbons and trophies than I can display in my house. I shouldnt have to touch the engine again as long as Im alive. These cars dont like idling in traffic. Depending on how they were driven in the past, its not unusual to see engine work in the 60-80,000 mile range depending on the age of the 930 and how obsessed the owner is.
