Still with no miles on it. IMHO, the 8C Competizione is the best looking production car to come out of Italy in the last 40 years. \r\nMany enthusiasts are not aware that the 8C was available in ANY color.... as a $36,000 optional extra, if memory serves. I wasn't too crazy about the four standard colors, so I figured since I was already paying $300K+ for a limited edition car, I was damn well going to get it in a color I wanted. My paint decision process is a bit hazy, but I recall finding a picture of a re-imagined Tipo 8C(ish) in a variant of Grigio, and decided on that basis that it was probably close enough to a traditional color that I could go with the Maserati color Grigio Nuvolari - especially as this choice would compliment the stock red interior, thereby avoiding yet another custom interior upcharge. I was told that custom color cars would be delivered last, but FofSF got most their orders (in 4 different colors!) simultaneously, so there was no additional wait as far I was was aware. \r\nDriving was 'ok' for the era, but IMHO not elevated to the level of the car's appearance - It's a stiff ride, perhaps a bit squirly in anything other than totally dry pavement, and the F1 gearbox isn't for everyone (I'd probably still own it if I'd thought to convince Alfa to build me a manual). But all things considered, for the low production that it was, I felt it was masterfully put together. And anyways, 'good looking' tends to trump all when it comes to future collectables. Not that long ago 300SL roadsters were $140k, Porsche 959 $200k and you couldn't even sell an LFA! Only the 959 is more rare than the 8C. Only the LFA sounds as good (in a V10 way) as the 8C sounds. None are as artistically beautiful as the 8C. The 8C is by far the least expensive to maintain thanks to being designed by Ferrari and built by Maserati using many Ferrari and Maserati parts off the shelf. The problem with the 8C is Alfa did a terrible job marketing the car when new (there weren't even any Alfa dealers in the U.S. then). In addition, the car was released in the midst of the Great Recession, the worst economic period since the Great Depression---not a good time to release a $300k car! How fast a car is fades in importance with time and what emerges as key are things like whether the car is visual art. After all, Ferrari 250 GTOs are a fraction of the price paid for many paintings whose values can exceed $100 million. So art is numero uno IMO. Having a work of art in your collection. Then there is drama. How does the car sound when, in your collection, you fire it up. Few cars ever produced sound as good as an 8C thanks to its Ferrari muffler. Yes, if you look at the muffler it says in big letters \"FERRARI\". Then materials used is key. Zero cheap plastic here! Carbon fiber seats derived from the Ferrari Enzo covered in the finest crafted leather ever fit to an automobile. Singer Porsche seats are not as finely crafted as the 8C seats. The aluminum center is milled from a solid block of aluminum! The door panels, the dash, and most everything else in the cockpit is real non-glossy (tacky) carbon fiber. And it has gauges rather than cheap LC screens for the tack and speedo, etc. The 8C is the most undervalued future classic at the moment. It also has the most historic name arguably in the automotive world! Enzo Ferrari, before there was \"Ferrari\" raced the 8C and it was a legendary car that totally dominated international motorsports for years! When Enzo ran his first race team, as a manager and no longer driving, it was as to manage Alfa Romeo's race team and what was it he and Alfa were racing? The 8C. If there had never been an Alfa 8C it is very well possible there would never have been a Ferrari motorcar company that we know today. So the 8C looks like 13 feet of art as Jeremy Clarkson called it the best looking car ever made and stated it belongs in a museum. It sounds epic and real in an era of turbo cars and EVs. It is built with the best materials. It has a beautifully tailored interior. It has arguably the most historic name in the auto industry and it is easy and affordable to maintain. Who is a a big 8C fan? None other than Jim Glickenhaus, the man behind the P4/5 and owner of many a great collector car. Jim could drive any car he wants and he told me he loved his 8C and drove it all the time. He sold it only after he put nearly 50,000 miles on it! The premise of the show was a response to the statement from a man at the Tate Gallery who stated for something to truly be art, it must have no other purpose. Ergo Clarkson sought to show the 8C was art and thus tongue in cheek proclaimed it did not drive well, handle well, etc. He was not really saying the car didn't drive well. What he was really trying to do in classic Clarkson fashion was show the 8C was art and his argument was it did nothing right so clearly it was art. Around 20 paintings have sold for over $100 million dollars at public auctions with the highest being $450.3 million! The highest price ever paid for any Ferrari at a public auction is just $51 million or just over 1/10 the highest painting price. Road & Track called the 8C one of the 10 most beautiful cars of the Century and in objective tests found a near ideal 49% front 51% rear weight distribution. 0-60 in 4.2 seconds, the Alfa pulled 1.02 Gs on the skid pad even with its undersized tires and in braking the Alfa set a Road & Track record of just 105 feet from 60 mph..... 2 feet less than its prior record holder.
