Alfa had high hopes on the 4 cylinder 2000 series after the success of the 1900. The 1900 series brought Alfa into mass production before take off with the smaller Giulietta. So they thought that the 2000 would continue the more up-market success. Well, it did not. The Berlina was insanely unpopular. So much so that on the 2000 cars, the Touring cabriolets outsold the berlina. And even on the face-lifted 2600 models, both, the Touring cabs and Bertone coupes handily outsold the berlinas.\n\nIt was likely a combination of the styling and driving experience. A heavy car, slightly underpowered and, compared to Lancias with similar shortcomings, significantly less refined in handling, style and luxury. When it comes to 2000/ 2600 four-doors, there is the Michelotti-styled 2600 de luxe by OSI which is significantly more modern and refined but sold even less. \n\nI find them awesome, mainly because you really do not see them at all on either side of the pond. So at any Alfa and Italian car meet, this car will be a star and conversation piece. This car here looks delightfully original and in fine driver-condition. Nice to see such a clean vehicle. I suspect the mileage shown on the odometer is correct -- never turned over. It is just too clean for any other explanation. Tom Zat at Alfa Heaven has half of one, its front end damaged. A fellow on Long Island had one years ago, but when it was damaged it was disposed of in parts and scrapped. Were it not for the fact that the spark plug wires are all loose from each other and came originally (as on roadsters) with two rubber sleeves holding first all four and then just the front two, I would believe otherwise that it just came from the factory. Great car. I drive mine fairly regularly, and get great raves. In retrospect, now that I am older and wiser, I recall one wild trip from Seattle to Vancouver with six people in the car at speed made even more awesome because the speedometer is in kilometers and I had to translate it in my head. Might even have hit 100 mph just to see how fast it would go. 100ks is only 60 mph or so. \r\nIs your car really dual exhaust? I have what looks in the rear bumper to be double, but the passenger side is blocked and there is only one pipe going through the drivers side. By the way, just last Saturday I had the tail pipe welded in Bellevue by Dan Fast Mufflers to whom I have always taken my Alfa cars. Because so many people were looking at the car and remarking about it they told me the job was on the house. They have done my 1959 two liter spider many times -- especially when that was my daily driver from 1965 to 1990, and my two liter sprint after I got it in 2010. Like Don Peterson I've had lots of these two liters, but now am down to just one of each version. Hope to take them to Monterey in August if the pandemic is under control. Your white color is great. And your interior -- especially your floor mats in front -- are spectacular. My only concern about limiting my driving is that I feel uneasy without seat belts. Make sure all your shift linkage is working well so you don't force your shift lever and break it off. Before I got mine the lever had been broken off twice -- all because the dog pushing the shift rails in the transmission had too much play. Whoever buys your car will be getting a real treasure. Maybe I might meet him someday so we can compare the last two of these in the US. As @Dantino wrote, the Fiat 1900 had a column shifted 5-speed. I had a 1953 1900 as my daily driver around 1987 and that was a hugely impressive car for its age. Fast, comfortable and lots of unique design features. (It even had a mechanical trip computer..!) As for the 5 on the tree, the Fiat solution was perhaps not quite what you think - it had 2nd-5th gears in a normal H pattern while first and reverse were in their own plane behind 4th and 5th. So it was more of a 4-speed with an ultra-low first that was never needed. Especially so as it despite the manual gearbox also had a hydraulic torque converter so for city driving you just never used anything other than 3rd gear... \r\n\r\nAs for why the Alfa 2000 didn\u2019t sell well, I think they just got caught out in the market. You could get the Fiat 2100/2300 with a 6-cylinder engine and similar size and features for a lot less money. You could get a Mercedes 220S for less money. And it wasn\u2019t that much more to get a Lancia Flaminia if you wanted to do upscale Italian. Tom Zat told me he got it in California and that it had extensive front end damage. JagBee, I believe the Brazilian Rio sales problem in Europe was created by some import customs hold up that let them sit and rot until they were unsellable, and FNM only tried exporting them that one time. Finally, the five speed on the column shifter works just fine if adjusted properly -- same lay out as the spider or sprint. The same five speed column shift is on my 1956 five window 1900 CSS Coupe although I did buy from OKT in Munich a Nardi conversion kit if I want to turn it into a five speed floor shift. That might take some doing. The fork rails will have to be turned over because the \"dog\" catching the ends will be on top. Finally, my 2000 sedan had the shift lever broken off the second time, and the Fiat dealer in El Cerrito, California, who had bought it from New Jersey had installed a regular floor box. Reverse gear would not fully engage even with the front seat fully back and finally could not even be held in gear. I saw his ad and called to buy it, but it had been sold to a co-ed at Napa College who ran it into the ditch and fouled up the steering so bad one had to hold the wheel to keep it from diving to the left. The dealer gave me her name and Honeymom and I flew down intending to drive it back to Seattle. It had been painted black by brush and the headliner had come loose so that it rested on heads. I told her I would give her a spider if she delivered it to Seattle. She did and so I had to find a 2600 sedan abandoned at Ft Sill needing a rear end to get the correct transmission and shift lever. I later found a second wrecked 2600 sedan in a wrecking yard near Reno and ended up giving both 2600 parts car to Tom Zat who took one behind his own 2600 sprint and the other behind my damaged 2000 sedan to Alfa Heaven after the convention in Seattle. He then drove the sedan out to Portland for the next west coast convention and the ALFA CLUB NEWSLETTER had a great article about his trip west in the sedan call \"The Cast Iron Cowboy Rides Again.\" As a father's day present my son, Tom, the best Alfa mechanic around (but who refuses to work on 164's) completely went through both engine and gear box this year. I drove it yesterday. Feels odd not to have seatbelts.
