It was cosmetically restored at the time with a low hours replacement engine. It spent 30+ years plowing and maintaining my 500 foot drive in snow country up by Lake Ontario with a V-blade plow attached to a front end loader and a back blade. Cutting firewood with a buzz saw ,moving firewood from shed to the house, and other chores. Now it has moved South with me and maintains my 1200 foot drive and moves things around, but is semi retired. Only maintenance other than occasional oil changes was one tuneup, water pump, rear seal, a pair of front tires and new tubes for the rear tires. They really just run forever if not abused. The over-run clutch was a big help, but not needed on the later models when they added the two-stage clutch. Two-stage clutch and live PTO were the big advances on my 1965 Ford (English, though sold in the US) And I also have high and low range. These are a bit fast on rough ground.\r\n\r\n But now... well, just figure out what you need. You do want to use it. That's where a lot of the enjoyment is.\r\n\r\nI started on a Farmall Cub. Bought the tractor when we moved here and did a full rebuild in 2004. Still runs great and is one of the handiest tools I have. If faithfully maintained, the original 6V electrics work fine, even in sub-zero temps.\r\n\r\nThis is a nice-looking example. It wears some aftermarket parts (such as the front bumper), but originality isn't a huge deal with Ns unless you have a very early production 9N with the cast aluminum grille, hood and dash. In fact, many of these tractors are mutts due to easy interchangeability of parts between years. Over 500K were made from 1939 to 1952 so parts are still available, although you have to watch out for \"land of almost right' parts that cut quality or sometimes don't fit.\r\n\r\nBoth my sons and a niece learned how to use a clutch on my tractor, and one of the nicest letters I ever got came from a 7 year-old boy that got to drive it (1st gear at idle) in the freshly-harvested corn field one fall afternoon with Dad standing by wearing a huge grin.\r\n\r\nThe N Series was marketed as a replacement for a team of horses, and often with young boys or girls operating the tractor in period ads. The three point hitch was a new invention from Harry Ferguson which revolutionized tractor safety. Ford was the first company that licensed it from Harry. It was a handshake deal until Henry Ford ll realized that he got the raw end of the deal. He tried to renegotiate it with no success and eventually told Harry to go 'F' himself. Henry kept using the three point hitch without paying Harry. Harry sued. It dragged on for something like 20 years. Harry won and Henry wrote a very large check to Harry. I've got a 52 Ferguson TEA20 up at the cabin for hauling, plowing, launching boats etc. Almost the same as an N in every dimension and shape - gets mistaken for one often. I guess the TEA is what Harry starting building when his deal with Ford went south. Some interesting differences - detuned British overhead valve motor on mine as already noted (although the US built TO models used Continental motors I believe) and the entire cowl tilts forward making mechanicals very easy to access. One odd thing - the transmission case of the Ferg is made entirely of aluminum. Seems a strangely expensive way to go about it back in the day. Also an ingenious starting method. The gearshift has positions for all forward gears and reverse as you'd expect. There's another position tho marked S which is a combined Neutral and starter switch. Starting in about 1950 the fenders got embossed Ford script. Aftermarket fenders can come either way depending on whether or not the manufacturer is willing to pay Ford licensing fees.
