(great fun....up there with poking yourself in the eyes with a stick)\r\n3) Too bad the A/C doesn't work and has a leak. Any work behind the dash in an XJ makes a root canal a pleasure journey, but I assume you are sure it is a leak where we all know it would be? Sadly, working A/C is a necessity in south Texas\r\n4) Can you give a brief status on the brakes, in particular the rear in-board bastards and when the systems (pads & calibers) were last serviced/changed? The IRS is priceless, - until either a rotor or caliper decide otherwise.\r\n\r\nFinally, my compliments for putting her up for sale with no reserve, I think you will be well rewarded. Yes, aside from the AC, the rest of the HVAC and rear demist all seems fine. Heat, fully adjustable, and the various ventilation combinations all seem OK.\r\n\r\n@misterlou : Thank you, sir, I wanted more dog, too!\r\n\r\n@Greg_F : We did not try paintless dent removal, but we did consider it. The main item is in the front passenger door. Very accessible, no apparent paint damage, should come out fine. There's a tiny impression up high on that same door that also should be easily remedied. The rocker ding is tougher. Either a glue-stick approach, with risk to the original paint, or for the truly impressive, up through the drain slot in the bottom of the rocker. If we were keeping it, we'd do the one door ding, and call it good.\r\n\r\n@Palmtree3 and @zachmac : Good eye, actually! There is a difference in ride height just based on fuel load. The car takes 175 lbs of gasoline, and it was pretty near empty at the end of our video shooting day. It does sit lower in the rear when full. \r\n\r\n@Hviid : Sorry about Ruby. And, seriously, you're here the day after the auction? Fate!\r\nGlad you asked about the fuel pumps! Yes, both work, switch works, and both sender units work. I took the car tonight for gas and switched tanks on the way home to make sure nothing had changed! Based on the detailed service log, we believe the tanks to be original.\r\n\r\nRegarding the AC, we had a professional shop test it, identified the leak, and then that was it. Had we done so earlier in our process, maybe the dash would be scattered in little pieces all over the garage right now. But, we left it until near the end, and decided not to pursue it. A golf trip south was planned though I had no desire to buy an XJ6. He made the suggestion because he knew I had owned a number of Jaguars in the past but not for many years. There it was. Low mileage and a bit dusty. Took it for a drive. I could smell her perfume on the shoulder belt. She had missed the garage door opening a couple of times so some non stock creases. Ridiculously low price and I drove the old cat home. Had both sides decreased and painted. At that point she looked very, very good. I bonded despite that flaccid three speed automatic and settled in to looking like an oldish person driving a car that received much more attention and praise per dollar spent than any other car I have owned. Driving over the hill from Santa Clara Valley (Silicon now) to Santa Cruz in California heat. Heard an odd pop and smelled coolant. Pulled over and lifted the bonnet. Water gushing out around one of the chrome acorn nuts. Reached over (not even that hot) and rotated and then lifted and out came a few inches of one of the studs that held the head to the block. My understanding is if there is not a proper mix of coolant and the car sits for extended periods the studs corrode. I take good care of my cars. I drive a lot and I enjoy driving with spirit when conditions allow. I mention this because my solution for the problem was not in character. A towel in the boot ripped into strips. Some home repair tools lent a hammer and a large screw driver and a couple of strips were driven down into the stud cavity and stayed there for forty thousand more miles before another stud broke. A bit embarrassed by that solution but in my defense I continued to have the car serviced in the appropriate way and in the old cat's defense she continued to perform beautifully until it was time to move on. Always think of those strips of cloth in that cavity when I see one of those gorgeous old engines.
