My Ghost was built only a few chassis before this one so they left the Springfield factory as sisters. I also remember meeting Jim Toole on several occasions. Everyone should understand that the opportunity to own this car is very rare. So many of these cars sat derelict for years and their condition suffered. Just ask me how I know! \r\n\r\nThis Ghost appears to have had only a handful of caring owners who maintained the car's original character. All of the tools, spare parts, and documentation are present and are priceless. The new owner should promptly join the Rolls-Royce Owners Club and the Silver Ghost Association and you will be good to go.\r\n\r\nUnfortunately, almost all brightwork on this car needs a good polishing. The items will be solid nickel alloy and should not require replating. Even the radiator shell should polish beautifully. We preferred Wenol polish and used corn starch to assist in removing the black oxidation. \r\n\r\nI don't believe there were 77 Ghosts constructed with Oxford bodies. I think the number would be closer to 17. I don't care to look it up at the moment. After tinkering for a few years he got more serious and took some college courses in auto body & paint, learned lead work and metal finishing and later upholstery. After that he moved up to full restoration of his own Rolls-Royces and Bentleys.\r\nHe entered hundreds of local and national concours which often resulted in 1st place or Best of Show trophies. He eventually became the chief judge of the RROC so. Cal. Since I was a young lad of about 8 years old, I grew up in the RROC So-Cal region. That is where I met James \u201cJimmy\u201d Toole. He was the owner of this very car and several other fantastic \u201cProper Motor Cars.\u201d Jimmy was an expert in all things vintage Rolls Royce and Bentley. He was a chief judge for several years in the club. But most importantly he was a dear friend who I miss very much.\r\n\r\nWhile I knew Jimmy since I was very young, I will skip ahead to when I was in college. I went to college very close to where he lived and I would frequently visit him at his home. Jimmy taught me hammer welding, concourse level prep work, and various nuances of care for Rolls Royce motor cars, especially the Silver Ghost. Jimmy was one of the few people I have heard of who did a full concourse restoration, on a Bentley S1 Drophead, drove it to the lawn at Pebble Beach, won his class, and drove it home! Just goes to show you how much of these cars he knew and loved. \r\n\r\nNow about THIS car! Around circa late 1990\u2019s, my parents and I in a \u201954 Bentley R-Type, another RROC member in a \u201923 Silver Ghost, and Jimmy in this very Ghost toured from the Los Angeles area to Belleview, Washington for the RROC National Meet. I got to spend a lot of seat time in this car on that trip and the car made it without fault through rain and shine.\r\n\r\nIn 2003, I was Jimmy\u2019s navigator for the Alpine Trials Recreation which only happens once every 10 years. THIS car was our vehicle! With Jimmy at the helm, we drove this car from England, through France and Germany to the start of the tour in Austria. We drove through some of the biggest rain storms I have ever been in, and this Ghost never missed a beat. From there we toured with over 30 other Silver Ghosts across western Europe, over the 13 highest passes, and through countless small towns. My fondest memory of that tour was being in this car climbing the Stelvio Pass in Italy. Ahhh Memories!!!\r\n\r\nJimmy was a true one of a kind person and whoever becomes this car\u2019s next custodian will have a phenomenal tour car!
