The fact is Italian cars of this era were made with cheaper Eastern European steel and had no rustproofing at all. They all have some corrosion - the question is where and how bad. The motors are unbelievably sweet. Very different from a Ferrari V8; all the grunt of an American mill but so much smoother! And the sound was addictive. I loved to open that car up - the power came on consistently through all gears despite the relatively heavy weight of the car and the sound of the Webers was like applause urging it on. Steering lightened up at speed. The interior is also really well laid out and beautiful.\r\n\r\nBut, parts are hard to find and expensive. A rebuild is not for the ambivalent or budget-conscious. The switch stalks on the column are broken or will be broken. I\u2019ve never seen an original one intact. They can be rebuilt by Verell at Unobtainium Parts and his craftsmanship is amazing. He makes them work and last as they should have from new. Your real expense here might be that gearbox if its trashed. Its the same ZF in an Aston Martin. Eyewatering spares prices... I have never found a Ghibli with a Maserati v8 that wasn't the one it was born with. Lots with SBC's and Fomoco's. These were bought by jet set playboys and celebs and they used them and blew them up. It's been kept very well considering it's sat for some 40 years. One could go one of two ways with this car. Option 1 and my suggestion: fix what needs to be fixed mechanically/electrically (if anything), give the suspension a refresh, replace the fuel and brake lines, rebuild the carbs, get it running (deal with the engine if necessary), fix the dent, clean the cosmetics as best you can and enjoy. Original vintage Maserati's in this kind of 'preservation class' condition are extremely rare, and these cars are original exactly one (1!!) time. Barring major engine work, I would think this car could be brought up nicely by a competent Maserati mechanic in under 60 hours with the major bills being suspension components (still sub <$2000 for parts). An engine rebuild would be another 70-80 hours with parts being a significant factor depending on what is needed once one goes deep (worst case, $15k parts and machine work alone). It is highly likely this engine needs to be gone through if it's only sat for 40 years.
