These 460\u2019s were fantastic engines, that with care run a long time. Three in my family ran over 200,000 trouble free miles, in the hands of an uncle who was the sales manager in the family trucking company. The best running one performance wise, was a 71 Lincoln Coupe, with a premium gas 460/4 brl with dual exhaust. I was clocked at 129 mph one night by a State Trooper, who let me GO with a warning! But the rest, 73,75 and finally a 78 Town Car, all had single exhaust led free regular gas 460/4 brl, single exhaust. That was changed by the company mechanic, with big pipes an turbo mufflers, with resonators in the tail pipes to help keep things quiet. We had no dyno, but seat of the pants feel said they all ran much better! Especially the 78, that eventually became my personal daily driver. That I tweaked with a few ideas. Like removing the cats, to hollow out, Edelbrock intake manifold and Holley Carb. Plus most importantly a 3:31 posi rear, that really helped the getup an go, with an increase in gas mileage at 60 mph with the cruise control set, from 16-18 mpg! Highway at a steady speed. Without any loss at all if I used the secondaries to really move! As compared with the stock Philco? Carb? But it drove and rode like sitting in a recliner in a cloud.
