Not much luck. As a kid in the mid 50's the Allards I saw in R&T haunted my dreams. I got close to them in the late 70's with discovery of the Monterey Historic's. There always seemed to be three or four entered and my sons and I pursued them thoroughly . During this period I met Bob Lytle as dedicated an Allard man as possible. Bob drove a black J2X with a Buick \"nailhead\" and two spares as this example sports. Bob raced with those spares and heavy wire wheels proudly mounted.\r\nBob had an XK120 roadster in the early 50's but was smitten with Allards and finally found one he could afford sometime later in Florida. It seems a wealthy young fellow was using it for drag racing. Bob flew back to Florida and drove it back to Los Angeles, in January. You know a fellow is dyed in the wool when they would attempt to drive a J2X from Florida to California. I was looking seriously for an Allard during this period and managed to drive a few, none in anger unfortunately. My impression was the J2 while with the same wheelbase(100\") as the J2X was difficult to fold myself into. As in knees and elbows in close proximity. I then found the motor in the J2X had been moved forward a reported 7&1/2\" resulting in more leg room and supposedly better handling. I don't know about the handling but I can attest to what a frightening site a high horsepower pedal to the metal head on view one of these is.\r\nIn one of our late 70's outings to the Historic's my two eldest sons and I were at the catch fencing inside the track just past the end of the esse's(sp?), which no longer exist. There was a slight bend to the left leading to the uphill section and under the bridge. We had already watched a couple classes race and were anticipating the big bore 50's stuff, Allards!\r\nWe could hear them in the distance bellowing through start finish and down toward the esse's. A black J2X we had seen in the pits with thunderous Oldsmobile power came onto that almost straight section with front wheels bouncing out of phase appearing to clear the ground so as only one at a time was in touch with pavement. Totally involuntarily I took three or four steps back with a son in each hand until we were a few feet behind the front of our 3/4 ton Ford van. It became suddenly clear why these cars were loved and feared at the same time. To get an independent front suspension the Ford axle was split in the middle to swivel independently. Some managed to control this and others didn't. It didn't dampen my ardor but I will have to admit none of us ever forgot that moment.\r\nI finally in the late 80's ended up with a K3 housing a 331\" Cad V8 and 3 spd box. Not nearly as arresting as the J2 or J2X but fast in a more aerodynamic aluminum body. It was a sweet car I prepped for the La Carrera reprise but as fate would have it sold to someone who thought it worth more that I did.\r\nThis example stirs my soul and I wish I had the space and or had sold something to make room. They don't come up often and hardly ever this nice. No racing, but perfect for that picnic in the country. Or perhaps just start it now and then and drive into town to get the Sunday paper. For more specifics, I suggest you contact Mike Y. at Zakira's Garage (see paperwork doc photographs).\r\nI say 'sister' car because this and one other J2 share a bit of history. As it was explained to me in 1993, this J2 and the other became 'one car' in the 1950s. As they were raced and accidents occurred, it made sense to utilize the best parts of both into one functioning race car. Much later (1980s?), a dedicated Allard collector, vintage racer and historian purchased them both with an eye toward undertaking the project to make them both whole again. Ultimately, that's what the restoration work performed in the 1990's accomplished. At the time I was under his employ and I vividly remember the (large!) crate showing up from England one day bearing two new chassis, made by the same (now old) craftsmen who originally worked for Allard back in the day. This began a multi-year restoration with an aim to bringing life back to two real, documented J2 cars with real in-period racing history. Everything was documented, everything was disclosed and all parties were clear on what was done. I'm sure the Allard Register at the time (would have) made a record of it- at least in terms of an article in the club publication. Don Marsh was a very discerning collector [and as mentioned in the comments owned a magnificent J2R 'JR', one of the factory LM cars (3401, 3402, or 3403- can't remember which one)], knew exactly what he was buying in this car, and was thrilled to buy it. The same can be said for the owner of the sister J2 in Cincinnati, a friend who (AFAIK) still owns and enjoys that magnificent car. A LONG-WINDED WAY OF SAYING, I would have zero expectation that Mr. Marsh's surviving family would know any of this and I certainly wouldn't expect the seller to know either- BUT- if I were a buyer I would be thrilled to be bidding. I've been around Allards for 30 years, got my first ride(s) in a J2 owned by the collector who oversaw the restoration of this one, the car offered here would be a GREAT J2 to own and enjoy. The 331 block is cast Iron where as the 390 is steel and extended to house a larger transmission I assume. I would not worry about the original block as there were very few if any logging of serial numbers of blocks back then and no one expects the original engine to be in a race car.
