Everglade Green was also used with Tomah Ivory and, I think, Sheffield Green, in other two-tone combinations for 1951.\r\n\r\nThis car does not appear to have been a factory two-tone car. The gray top appears to have been applied in the same manner as would have been done at the factory for a 1950 two-tone Mercury. In 1951, there was a strip across the top edge of the roof near the windshield. That strip was the cutoff for the roof top color for the factory two tone cars.\r\n\r\nBased on the bumpers, this is a very late in the model year car (grooves in both bumpers where license plates are mounted).\r\n\r\nQuite a few subtle changes were made throughout the 1951 production run. The earliest cars had no grooves in the license plate areas of their bumpers. Later in the model year, the rear bumpers started having grooves in the license plate area and then the front bumper license plate area grooves started very late in the 1951 production run. \r\n\r\nThe only pictures I could find of the door sill plates were #86 and #87. The sill plates on this car appear to be metal but they do not appear to be factory original. This car, as an early in the year model, would have come with aluminum sill plates that had black embossing on them.\r\n\r\nBecause of the Korean war, aluminum because scarce and unavailable around June of 1951 so later in the model year 1951 Mercs came from the factory with rubber sill plates.\r\n\r\nThe whitewall tires would be correct for this car but the wheels would have been black from the factory.\r\n\r\nAgain, because of the Korean War, whitewall tires became unavailable around June of 1951, so, later in the 1951 production run, cars came from the factory with blackwall tires and red wheels.\r\n\r\nBased on the old pictures (#106 & 107), it appears that this car came from the factory with the low front bumper guards which were standard (no extra charge) on 1951 Mercurys. This car now has the accessory front bumper guards. \r\n\r\nDealers could order cars with either the standard low profile bumper guards or with the tall accessory bumper guards. The dealership with which I am familiar always ordered their cars with the tall bumper guards and they charged $25 for the tall accessory bumper guards. Dealers did not install the tall accessory bumper guards.\r\n\r\n1951 Mercurys could come from the factory with either \"standard\" upholstery or with what was called \"custom\" upholstery. This car appears to have \"standard\" upholstery which means that it would have had a rubber front floor mat and a rubber mat for the bottom of the trunk.\r\n\r\nThe \"custom\" upholstery was a nice upgrade and was fairly rare. The front floor mat on a \"custom\" interior car would have been carpet and the seat fabric was a considerable upgrade over the \"standard\" fabric. Cost was, I think, $50 for the \"custom\" upholstery option.\r\n\r\nWhen new Mercurys arrived at the dealership, the front floor mat would be rolled up and in the trunk. Also, if the car had a radio from the factory, then the antenna would also be in the trunk.\r\n\r\nWhen the car was sold, the dealership would install the front floor mat and, if there was a radio, they would also install the antenna. It was always a moment of truth when drilling the big hole for the antenna.\r\n\r\nIn the event that freezing weather was encountered while the cars were in transit, they came to the dealership from the factory with alcohol in the radiator. When the car was sold, the make-ready department of the dealership would replace the alcohol with water.\r\n\r\nThis car appears to have never been undercoated which I regard as a big plus. If a customer wanted undercoating, it was done at the dealership. The cost was around $25.\r\n\r\nWarranty on new 1951 Mercurys was 90 days or 4,000 miles, whichever came first.\r\n\r\nThis car brings back lots of memories. Here's a little history of how this car came to be. A '51 Merc 2 door coupe was my father-in-laws first car when he was 15 or 16 and it became my in laws first family car when they married. My in-laws would often talk about the car, so I thought it would be a nice gesture to find a decent driving and rust free '51 and do a quick paint job and give it to them to enjoy a sunday drive for ice-cream etc.\r\n\r\nWell, the \"quick paint job\" turned into a full restoration! I spent over a year restoring it and making it look like my in-laws car looked in the 50's. My father-in-law had just completed his memoirs and had a description and pics of his original car (see pics 106 and 107). So it I gave it the same dove grey over green (bare metal) paint job, matching factory interior, the same spotlight and headlight hoods, the same Hudson front hubcaps, finished with the same 2\" lowering blocks in the back and glass pack exhausts with chrome tips.\r\n\r\nMy wife and I gave them the car as a surprise gift around the end of 2013 and my in-laws enjoyed taking the car to local shows in Iowa, winning a few trophies and enjoying sunday ice-cream runs. Sadly, after 60 years of marriage, my mother-in-law passed away in 2018 and my father-in-law can no longer drive, so with heavy hearts, we picked the car back up and bought it back to CO to sell it last summer.
