The carb jetting on this one should be richer than original to compensate for the exhaust.\nYour car must have a good ignition system, because starting the car from cold and letting it idle is a big no no on a two stroke - it will foul the plugs and fill the crankcase with unburned fuel. I was just reading old Saab service bulletins from 1965 and they were very specific about making sure the air preheat tube was operational and the choke was used sparingly.\nThis car has a cool High performance modification to the air cleaner, it has 2 intake pipes and is turned to the right side of the engine, away from the exhaust heat. Has the inside of the air cleaner been modified? It's a great match for the sport exhaust. The sport exhaust might be a little bit loud for some people, but it can be made much quieter with a glasspack in the middle of the exhaust. \nThe original interior is amazing, it shows that this car was not used too much.\nThe jack and tool kit also are original and show the care this car has received.\nSome may want to change the gearbox to a 4 speed, but the 3 speed is super durable and really fits the car well, I don't think this car will be used as a daily driver, so much better to keep it original. The big difficulty in changing to a 4 speed is the shifter column, they are very rare for an early car like this one. \nThe Tropic hood with the extra vents is really cool. There appears to be an extra cooler plumbed in to the heat core circuit that is mounted by the battery. The chain that operates it was disconnected by the PO because stretches across the entire engine compartment and he was annoyed to have it in the way. I drove that thing everywhere for nine years and only parked it because parts were hard to come by in the '80s for daily drivers. Saab was trying to forget all the 95 and 96 owners as fast as it could, and made life hard on us. \nI echo others including @JIMMY saying the 3-speed gearbox is great, more durable than the 4-speed. Don't remove it. You can get into first gear no-crunch while moving at a slow speed if you know how to double clutch. The only downside of the 3-speed is a pretty big chasm between first and second gears, which can be a little annoying getting off from a standing start uphill; you really have to rev it out in first. I loved my 93 with the 3-speed.\nGreat points about this car include the incredibly rare original blue woven upholstery fabric on the seats. These materials were hopelessly fragile from spring 1960, when the 96 was introduced, through the '66 model year. I had to replace mine with blue vinyl inserts. I recommend the new owner use foam seat pads or foam-padded seat covers to preserve the original material except at shows. Once it rips, it's done. The seller @Fly_TWA is correct, the passenger seatback side vinyl ripped when the seatback was pushed forward with the door closed. That was a known issue. It adds authenticity. ;)\nThe issue with the driver door is simple: Saab made a design error with the doors on models 92, 93, 95 & 96. There are unprotected painted fold-over seams at the bottoms and sides of the doors which collect mud, salt, or any other corrosive materials. Saab never did anything about it. Our solution in the northeast was to undercoat the entire bottoms of the doors including the seams, and up the side seams about three inches, when the cars were new, and make certain the drain holes were always clear at the bottom. The driver door on this car has clearly received some undercoating as an attempt at stopping the rust problem. The real solution is to pop the door card, clean and rustproof inside the bottom of the door, sand any rusted metal clean along the seam and on the outside of the door where it is rusting through, weld in metal as needed, rustproof everything, repaint, and undercoat that seam. The passenger door could receive similar preventive treatment minus the painting and rust repair. When these cars were on sale new, you would see them everywhere in the rust belt with the door bottoms completely rusted out within about four to five years. If you undercoated the bottoms of the doors and a little up the sides when new, protecting the fold-overs, you avoided the problem. \nThe underside of the car looks great, and it's cool to see the trunk floor and the vertical rear panel ahead of the rear bumper in such great shape. These panels used to rust out in locales where salt was applied to roads.\nThe rear spring and shock towers look very good, but there is a simple rust-preventive fix that can be done, as these can rust out at the spot welds. That area is an unventilated double wall construction. Drill a hole the size of a dime or less in the curved wheel house panel behind the shock towers inside the trunk, about 2/3 of the way up from the trunk floor, between the two concave vertical stampings. Now the double wall compartment is ventilated and won't rust. Further, you can spray inside with POR-15, other rust-preventive treatment, or even regularly treat with water-displacing WD-40, and you will never have rust there. In 1970, Saab implemented this improvement at the factory, and painted the entire interior of those compartments. In 1969, Saab did the same thing with the front spring towers. I made these improvements on my '66 when I bought it in 1974. \nAll my two-stroke Saabs tended to overheat in the hot summer and in heavy-duty hilly driving in hot weather. All Saab owners knew about this problem back when. We would joke about turning on the heater on long uphill drags in summer, but it worked. The more mechanically-oriented of us also used the coldest available spark plugs (Bosch M240T1) and made sure to keep our cars in perfect timing and the cooling systems maintained to perfection. \nBrakes are also an issue. So if you are going to buy this car to drive in the mountains, I advise against it. The cars were not safe in mountain driving with more than two people aboard and free-wheeling. I knew of several people who smoked their brakes and almost crashed. Then it happened to me, even though I'd installed front discs from a '72 96 on my '66. This was in the Shenandoah Valley area of Virginia with three adults in the car including me. I got the car stopped, barely, but it was terrifying. The V4 with the free wheel manually locked out is a better bet for mountain driving, and the V4 from 1970 on will not overheat (the earlier ones used the 2-stroke radiator and would overheat in heavy stop-and-go traffic in the summer; ask me how I know). \nTwo-stroke Saabs also had known problems with ignition performance in wet weather driving. On the bullnose models, this is exacerbated by the placement of the distributor immediately behind the front grille, but it was even an issue with front-radiator cars 1965-68. The spray from a tractor trailer in a rainstorm or snowstorm could take you down to two cylinders and then even to one. To minimize this problem, it's essential to change distributor cap, ignition and coil wires, and spray the whole setup with silicone at least once a year. I assume this car will continue to be a fair-weather collector and show car, but be forewarned and prepared if you find yourself out on the road in heavy rain. \nDespite their weaknesses, these early Saabs were a brilliant concept, soundly constructed, and will always remain some of my favorite cars. I regretted selling my 93 the instant I let it go, and my '66 ice-blue 96 was a stalwart companion with soul. \nA few words of advice regarding gearbox operation: Shift gears gently, as shown in the driving video here. Also don't sit at a stop with the car in gear and the clutch pedal down. Throw-out bearings weren't made as tough then as they are now. Sit in neutral, gently bump third gear position to stop the gears, then shift without any crunch into first when it's time to go, and all will be fine forever. When coasting in free wheel, increase revs gently and smoothly when returning to power. Don't just hit the gas and give the transaxle a punishing punch.\nIt is true that you should start the car and move off immediately, from cold, getting rid of the choke as quickly as possible. It's stated plainly in the Saab owner's manual. \nThis 1962 96 is one of the nicest of the vintage Saabs I've seen in a very long time. I predict its next caretaker will be lucky and happy. Maintain it fastidiously and regularly, including all the chassis greasing, keep it timed properly and the ignition parts fresh, the exhaust unobstructed, the cooling system in tip-top shape, and it will serve you very well. Many fancier cars have been made, but none more fun to drive. He owned the car for about a decade before passing away. The next owner purchased the car from that estate and owned it about four years. By the time he had decided to sell this car in 2014, I had spent a year looking for a bull nose car for my wife. Saab\u2019s were her favorite, and the first thing she bought after grad school was a black Saab 9-3 5-speed that she drove like she stole for a decade until the turbo let go. Repair costs outweighing value, we sold it where it sat to a couple kids who arrived to collect it in a tuner Jetta with a giant silhouette decal of a naked woman in the back window. My wife cried a lot that day. Some time later, she casually mentioned that she\u2019d like to have a vintage Saab one day, and that was all I needed to hear to begin the hunt. \n\nWhen this popped up on BaT, I jumped fast. And the first Saab 99s had free wheeling as well. With the V4, there were several reasons. One, both time and money were short at this small aircraft maker, so the V4 was bolted right up to the existing transmission with the taller Monte Carlo 850 final drive. Job done, though the gearboxes didn't last well for V4 drivers who abused them with hard shifts and slamming power on from free wheel coasting. The transaxles couldn't handle the torque of the new engine. But free wheeling remained through the end of production in 1980. \r\nAnother reason is tha many Saab owners, among them my family, really liked free wheeling and would have been aghast had it been discontinued. It allowed clutch-free downshifting and was convenient both on the road and in town. \r\nFinally, Saab had promoted free wheeling for years as a safety feature. The owner manuals stated that if you started to skid, just lift your foot from the gas, and let the car coast, and it would regain traction rather than send you into a spin. True. It worked. Both Scandinavian and American customers liked that in rain and snow. I think that's why Saab kept free wheeling on the 99 during the first couple of years. \r\nRegarding the key switch on the floor of 99s and 900s, the reason was that Saab opted to meet theft-deterrence requirements by locking the transmission rather than the steering. The company bragged about this, as it would allow a locked manual-shift car to be steered if it had to be pushed in an emergency, for example, whereas steering-lock cars obviously could not be maneuvered. The 99 had a floor shifter, and the starter switch moved with the shifter. \r\nSaab was one of many small, highly innovative European manufacturers that delivered far more innovation and creative thinking through their products than did larger companies. The challenges were making profits, fixing early production problems, and global marketing. Most of these companies went out of business or were swallowed up by larger firms. This was a part you would obtain from a Saab dealer. The set came with what looked like a hand drawing of how to install. I may still have a new set in my tiny antique Saab parts stash from my driver days. \nRegarding the rust on the driver side front fender, it's common, because the idea of inner plastic or fiberglass fenders hadn't been thought up. The front tire slings everything at the fender, and mud and moisture get caught around the light fixture. Presto, rust culture. \nRemove the light fixture (easy), clean and sand everything, put new metal in if needed but not if not, coat with rust-preventive, paint and undercoat. Done. It's hard to find these fenders, so new owner, fix this one. ;)\nUse synthetic oil as others have suggested below, and you'll benefit several ways. The spark plugs won't foul and they'll last much longer. Your engine will get better lubrication and will last longer. Exhaust system won't clog anywhere near as fast, if ever. And you'll virtually eliminate smoke, which was a terrible advertisement for Saab, and environmentally disastrous. When I switched to AMSoil, life got so much better. Saab recommended 6000 miles for plug changes in the early years, and by '67 they recommended every 3000 miles to keep owners free from fouled plugs and the Saab stories they'd generate. I found with the AMSoil, I could go 12,000 miles on plugs with no problem at all, and no smoke to annoy others.\nGotta love these old Saabs. At the time Saab sold a complete hood with the vents and the deflectors in the lower front removed. I took dimensions from this hood and cut holes in another hood, the cut on the top side of the hole is visible so it has to be straight. Basically, I would weld the front differential solid so that both axles spun at the same rate. No side to side \"differential\", completely locked. \r\n\r\nMade for amazing traction on the ice. Turn the wheel and the back end of the car rotated to match the direction of the front tires. Also made it challenging to drive on dry land and get it on the trailer . \r\n\r\nBut we had an absolute ball with the car. \r\n\r\nFriend of mine set up his 96 this way and then installed a Ford V-6 where the Ford V-4 had resided. Turns out is bolts right up. It kinda seems like the aeronautical engineers at SAAB could have come up with that as easily as the free wheeling. Anyway, they made their choice and I don\u2019t disagree.\r\n\r\nOn the four strokes I kind of lean against free wheeling. There\u2019s no engine survival need for it and you can get the same effect simply by pushing in (disengaging) the clutch. Yet you\u2019re eliminating the possibility of any engine braking. Engine braking is minimal in two strokes so it wasn\u2019t much of a sacrifice there but it\u2019s very useful in four strokes. Especially with the weak brakes back then.\r\n\r\nAnyway, I\u2019m not dissing SAAB. I really like the funky oddball stuff and the older SAABs are some prime material. Saab only sold the later parts as spares, so it was a common upgrade.\nThe spare transmissions are a 3 speed correct for this car and a 4 speed for a long nose car with hydraulic clutch. The 4 speed steering column will not fit this car, it looks like early 70's vintage. It would fit '64 and newer cars. The front axle shafts and steering knuckles are what will be needed for disc brakes. They match the 4 speed gearbox, but will not connect to a 3 speed. Back in the day quite a few of these cars were upgraded to 4 speed, 850 cc and disc brakes. But this car being such a nice clean original should be kept original. \nThe drum brakes on these cars were pretty good, but Pat Moss Carlsson said she rarely used the brakes, she just pitched the car sideways to slow down. \nSome people think 2-strokes are not reliable, but they are so simple they just work. Especially these single carb versions. These engines are like a chainsaw or a boat motor, they love to run at full load.
