Claiming it as a worrisome problem runs contrary to at least my personal CX ownership experience, including at least 100,000 KM of CX on the autobahn experience dating back to my first CX2400 Pallas C-Matic in the very early 1980s.\r\n\r\nAmong my present CX collection I happen to have a very low mileage twin to this Athena. Low mileage enough that the factory delivery plastic hasn't been fully removed from the rear seating, yet it looks the twin. Fabulous cars!\r\n\r\nArmchair pundits tend to offer all sorts of opinions about the Douvrin Athena engine, but my experience is an Athena is a very drivable and fun car. The non-Citroen engine design of the Athena was a good choice given the investment limitations imposed on Citroen at the time.\r\n\r\nCX Athenas are really practical cars. It has been an immense pleasure to own this car for the last 2.5 years and it fulfilled a lifelong dream. In the course of working at a specialty vintage car dealer, I've driven many cars but the Citroen experience is so singular that I knew I had to own one someday when I first drove one, which was probably a dozen years ago.\r\n\r\nAlthough not as iconic as the DS which it replaced, the CX was equally unique, fully Citroen, and was a considerable commercial success, selling in excess of a million units. The centerpiece of the experience is the hydraulic system, which like the DS, handles suspension, braking and steering. The steering is the power actuated DIRAVI type (see demonstration in video) which self centers even when the car is off. But so many other characteristics about the car are weird as well, ranging from the exterior design to the rain shedding convex rear window treatment, to the instrument pod, controls, even the action of the interior door handles. \r\n\r\nOne of my favorite things about this car is the extent to which it absolutely blows the minds of anyone who comes in contact with it, regardless of whether they're a car enthusiast or not. It's so far away from a normal car that even people without any interest in cars react to it, whether is the insanely cushy rear seats, the sideways acting rear sun visors on the headliner for rear seat occupants, the peculiar steering, the super squishy ride, the steering wheel, the instruments, or any number of other odd characteristics. Almost none of it is normal. To think that over a million people experienced these peculiarities and concluded that it was how they wanted to get around on a daily basis blows my mind.\r\n\r\nToday, it's very much a special occasion car. It makes every journey a unique sensory experience and is so absurdly French.\r\n\r\nThis particular example is much nicer than most, which is why I bought it. I like the relatively early cars with the early type instrument cluster (later cars got conventional instruments) and many other details that I think are more fabulous. Plus the OHV engine (most CXs had pushrod engines) with Weber carburetor with a 5-speed manual which is probably the most conventional part of the car.\r\n\r\nIt was in the Limousin region of France until being exported to Quebec in 2002, at which point it had covered about 102,000km. The odometer has rolled over once so the indicated km of 58,000 is actually 158,000km or around 98k miles. The car came to the US in 2016, where it has been since.\r\n\r\nI drove the car in New York before buying it and was smitten with it, but prior to shipping it out, I had the timing belt replaced, and have had plenty of other upkeep performed including a comprehensive suspension service earlier this year, plus rebuilt carburetor and starter, electronic ignition conversion, five new Pirelli CN36s, and much more. Happy to go into deeper detail but on a high level, I have tried to be the best possible steward for this car.\r\n\r\nI took it to Monterey Car Week in 2023, and it was a really exceptional device for that use case because it has lots of room for you and your friends, plenty of ground clearance and a comfy ride for unpaved parking lots, and was probably the only CX there. Far more unique than driving around in a Ferrari Daytona and I received constant \"I just saw you driving\" texts.\r\n\r\nAnyway, this has been a long and rambling introductory comment, but I am very enthusiastic about this car and I hope its new owner will enjoy it as much as I have. The Cx is named for the French abbreviation for coefficient of drag and it is indeed famously aerodynamic so that helps with high speed performance but even around town, it really does feel quite peppy also.\r\n\r\nSpeaking of the Citroen Rendevous, the Citroen Club is extremely active in this area and full of exactly the absurd people you'd expect, and furthermore, they're extremely welcoming and friendly. It is probably the part of Citroen ownership I will miss most. This car won the \"Best CX\" award at the Rendevous last October. Not a high bar admittedly since there were only 2-3 in attendance. So probably the next step would be to charge it, see if it blows cold air then, and if so, see how long that lasts, and if a short time, then start looking for leaks.\r\n\r\n@DanChester I certainly have no info to the contrary regarding the oil pan gasket.
