It truly is a very unique piece of automotive history. At my shop back in late 93, we started transplanting the 20b 3 rotor engines into RX7 fd\u2019s creating the Banzai Edition RX7\u2019s. Many of the 20b engines we received were half cut Cosmos which gave us a glimpse of all the technology and Just how special these amazing cars were.\r\n Finally in 2009 I got to drive my first one and for several years after we routinely worked on a few that were apparently illegally imported. Then In 2012, I found out a close friend of mine in Canada had imported a few of these cars after which I spent many years trying to pry one away from him. Finally one was promised to be mine and it remained in Canada, (cold storage) before I finally managed to get the EPA and customs documents in order and import it to the US. At that time I was absolutely sure I would never have a reason to sell it. But old age, some health issues and having so many things to take care of, clean and keep up with are forcing me to sell off many of my prized rotary powered vehicles including my RX7 boat and a few other special vehicles that'll be on BAT soon.\r\n\r\n I've mostly driven this car to our local Cars and Coffee at the Palm Beach Outlet Mall, It's like 2 miles from our shop. Meaning.... the car stops you dead in your tracks and you pay utmost respect to this flagship model. \n\nThe 20B Cosmo was a giant leap for Mazda and again shows that Mazda could run with the big dogs and punch well above their weight class. I cannot imagine the development cost of this model, and as it was a non-export, very low volume seller, I would not be surprised if they lost money or barely broke even on these cars.\n\nSadly, when these cars were dirt cheap in the early 2000s so many were cut-up for their engines to be transplanted in RX7s.\n\nI recently read that the Cosmo is now considered to be one of the beautiful modern Japanese cars ever to be designed and I whole heartedly agree. My response to that is this: Recently there's been a resurgence of people restoring, collecting, racing, drifting and loving rotary engine powered vehicles worldwide. There are also several aftermarket companies manufacturing engine components from Billet and other high-tech materials. I know because It's my life, what I do. I talk regularly with those in the industry and see countless posts on social media. So there's a whole generation of new people learning and building these cars. Probably more people are available to work on them than ever. But, there's definitely an unfounded stigma attached to rotary engines about being very complex and difficult. But truly, nothing could be further from the truth, these are very simple engines with only a few moving parts which makes them very reliable by design. The two rotor 13b Mazda engine has three moving parts, the 20b three rotor Mazda engine has a whopping four moving parts. A typical V8 engine has hundreds of moving parts. \r\nI actually have a supercharged 13b two rotor engine in my 20\u2019 jet boat. It has been running great for over 25 years with no problems yet.
